The Beatles' manager Brian Epstein was able to convince Mike Smith, an assistant in the A&R department at Decca Records , to attend a Beatles concert at the Cavern Club on December 13, 1961 . Smith was so impressed with the performance that he scheduled test recordings for January 1, 1962 at 11 a.m. The production management of the Decca Audition was Mike Smith in the Decca Studios , Broadhurst Gardens, London , there was only one take per song, it was recorded in mono .
