background

Cilla Black

Love of the Loved was probably composed in 1959 and is mainly based on the musical ideas of Paul McCartney. According to his girlfriend at the time, Dorothy Rhone, McCartney wrote the song for her.

Love of the Loved was first played live by the Quarrymen and adopted into the live repertoire of the Beatles.

John Lennon introduced Brian Epstein , the Beatles manager, to the Cavern Club cloakroom attendant , Cilla Black . Cilla Black sang the song Summertime to Epstein with the Beatles as a backing band . However, this appearance could not convince Epstein. On September 6, 1963, a management contract between Brian Epstein and Cilla Black came about after an appearance at the Blue Angel . George Martin then signed a record deal with Parlophone with Cilla Black . Martin produced Black's debut single Love of the Loved , which was attended by Paul McCartney. The single was released on September 27, 1963 and reached number 30 on the UK charts.

Love of the Loved was never recorded for EMI by the Beatles .

Recording the Beatles

Brian Epstein was able to convince Mike Smith, an assistant in the A&R department at Decca Records , to attend a Beatles concert at the Cavern Club on December 13, 1961 . Smith was so impressed with the performance that he scheduled test recordings for January 1, 1962 at 11 a.m. The production management of the Decca Audition was Mike Smith in the Decca Studios , Broadhurst Gardens, London , there was only one take per song, it was recorded in mono . Overdubs were not produced and no mixing took place. So the Beatles played practically live - they recorded 15 songs within an hour. In addition to Love of the Loved , the Lennon / McCartney compositions Hello Little Girl and Like Dreamers Do were recorded. In early February 1962, the Beatles were surprisingly rejected by Decca.

Occupation:

publication

Since 1979 the 15 songs of the Decca Audition have been published on bootlegs .

On April 16, 1981, ten songs of the Decca Audition under the title Dawn of The Silver Beatles were released on record in a legal gray area in the USA via the mail order company PAC Records . The songs were artificially lengthened, but the speed was too high compared to the original recordings. The total circulation of the album was 153,000 copies.

Unlike the songs Hello Little Girl and Like Dreamers Do , Love of the Loved was not released on the compilation album Anthology 1 .
