Horace Clifford Westermann

Horace Clifford Westermann (born December 11, 1922 in Los Angeles , California , USA - † November 3, 1981 in Danbury , Connecticut ), was an American sculptor and painter . He is considered an important representative of contemporary avant-garde sculpture and object art .

life and work

Horace Clifford Westermann studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1947 to 1950 .

His early work mainly dealt with war issues. Later he created assemblies of miniaturized houses made of plywood with found objects made of other materials, such as glass, metal and others. By merging with modern assembly processes and traditional sculpting techniques, Westermann created a wide variety of works of art with several recurring themes: war, social and political criticism and commentary, technology and science fiction, humor, travel and transport . He also created object boxes closely related to Dadaism and Surrealism .

His first solo exhibition was in 1961 at the Allan Frumkin Gallery in New York City . In 1968 he took part in the 4th documenta in Kassel with six wood and wood-metal sculptures and was also represented at documenta 5 in 1972. In 1976 he had an exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City.
