12 Songs is the second studio album by singer-songwriter Randy Newman . It was releasedon Reprise Records in April 1970 . Although the album was a commercial failure at the time, it received good reviews and is now considered a rock music classic, reachingnumber 354on Rolling Stone's 2003 list of the 500 best albums of all time .
Compared to Newman's richly orchestrated debut , 12 songs are orchestrated sparingly. The lyrics are partly political, for example Newman in Yellow Man is directed against racism , partly they are simply love songs. No singles were released from the album, but songs like Have You Seen My Baby? and Mama Told Me (Not to Come) have now become often covered rock standards.
On October 25, 1990, Reprise released the album on CD .
