Andreas Schibany

Andreas Schibany (* 1966 ; † June 25, 2014 ) was an Austrian economist, innovation and futurologist .

Life

Andreas Schibany studied philosophy and economics at the University of Vienna and then went on to work as an innovation researcher in the field of systems research at what was then the Seibersdorf Research Center, now the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT). From 1999 he worked at JOANNEUM RESEARCH Forschungsgesellschaft mbH , where he focused on the area of knowledge and technology transfer between universities and business. In 2010 he became head of the TIP group (technology, innovation and policy advice) and worked as a consultant for the Austrian federal government and played a leading role in the further development of the government's research and technology report. In 2013 he moved to the Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS) and headed the Research, Innovation and Systems Analysis group.

Andreas Schibany fell ill with bone marrow cancer, which was treated with a stem cell transplant of foreign stem cells . He died on June 25, 2014 after the transplant of complications from an infection. Schibany was married and had a son.

Act

Schibany worked primarily in the areas of research, technology and innovation policy as well as on the complexes of research financing, university research, evaluation and the comparative analysis of national innovation systems. During his work at Joanneum Research, he established the annual policy letters on Austrian research funding, thereby influencing the allocation of funding fields. He was considered an advocate of basic research and its funding in Austria. Furthermore, he was responsible for the research and technology report of the federal government for a long time . He also initiated a controversial debate in Austria about the distribution of research funds.
