Herschel Bernardi

Herschel Bernardi (born October 30, 1923 in New York City , New York - † May 9, 1986 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor , voice-over and dubbing artist .

Life

Bernardi was already active as a child actor on the stages of the Jewish theater and appeared in two feature films between 1937 and 1938 . After the end of World War II , he had uncredited appearances in two Hollywood films . His career stalled in the McCarthy era when he was accused of "un-American activities". In 1958 he received the role of Lt. Jacoby in Blake Edwards ' crime series Peter Gunn , which he played in 102 episodes until 1961 and through which he became known with the American television audience. He was nominated for an Emmy in 1959 for his role . After the series ended, he first played a few guest roles in various television series until he received the title role in the sitcom Arnie in 1970 . For this he was nominated twice for the Golden Globe . 48 episodes of this were produced by 1972. He played one of his most famous film roles in 1963 in The Girl Irma la Douce as Inspector Lefevre , he had another prominent role alongside Woody Allen in the comedy The Straw Man . He also spoke roles in a few cartoons and series and was heard as a voice-over speaker in various commercials. He was also busy on Broadway in the 1960s . One of his most famous roles was that of "Milkman Tewje" in the original production of Anatevka , which he took over in 1965 from Zero Mostel . A record with the singing performances of the Broadway performance made it onto the Billboard 200 in 1967 . He played the Tewje again in 1981 at the Broadway Revival. For this he received his second Tony Award nomination, the first he had already received in 1969 for his leading role in the musical Zorba . However, Bernardi always remained without distinction in all nominations.

Bernardi died in 1986 at the age of 62 as a result of a sudden heart attack . He was married and had a son from that marriage and three other children from a previous marriage.
