Heliconia imbricata is a species ofthe Heliconia family (Heliconiaceae). It is native to southern Central America.
description
Heliconia imbricata is an evergreen, perennial, herbaceous plant , vegetatively similar to a banana plant and with a height of 3.5 to 6 meters. Per shoot there are three to four green, occasionally chestnut-red leaves with hairy stems, the underside of which is finely patterned like a net. The longest leaf per shoot is up to 230 centimeters long and 50 centimeters wide.
The inflorescences are upright, the inflorescence can be found in two lines imbricated bracts .
Each coil consists of 20 to 30 flowers , the outer end of the flower envelope is green, towards the base it is white or yellow. The sepals are glabrous or slightly rough-haired on the edge.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.
distribution
Heliconia imbricata is distributed from Costa Rica to northwestern Colombia.
Systematics and botanical history
The species was first described in 1891 by Carl Ernst Otto Kuntze as Bihai imbricata , and in 1893 John Gilbert Baker introduced it to the Heliconias .
