action
Diana Sullivan is a successful journalist based in Manhattan New York . Their daughter Grace is a difficult teenager and a cocaine addict.
Diana wants to write an article for Cosmopolitan Magazine about her family who live in a swampy river area in Louisiana. She and her daughter set out to find Joe, who is the brother of Diana's grandfather. They meet Joe's iron widow Ruth, who lives alone in the swamps with her four problem children Tommy, Mark, Pauly, Mike and his wife Candy and learn that Joe is dead. They further learn that Joe and Ruth married when she was 12 years old and that Joe was like a monster to her, beating, tormenting and torturing her just for his enjoyment and fun.
Ruth and her sons have a completely different approach to life than Diana and Grace because of the experiences they had to go through. In the process, completely different cultures collide, which are supposed to lead to a tragic result.
It takes a long time for the two different families to develop trust, and Grace sinks into boredom.
Diana, Ruth and Candy are meanwhile going into town to run errands, where Diana still wants to do some research for her story. She gets to face a world that is ruled by the regional oil industry, which ruthlessly exploits nature and people.
Meanwhile, Grace throws a little cocaine party at home in the swamp, which ultimately ends in disaster. Tommy and Mark run amok and want to kill each other. In the process, Grace escapes in a boat across the marshy river out of fear and is almost injured by an alligator. When Diana returns and learns this, she immediately starts looking for her daughter and after a while finds her safe again.
After this experience, Grace and Diana get closer again and so Diana finally decides to leave the province and return to her normal life. They fly back to New York, while Ruth and her family continue their previous lives, secluded in the swamp.
