Chaim Topol (born September 9, 1935 in Tel Aviv ), also known as Topol , is one of the most famous Israeli actors .

Life

Topol began his stage career in productions for the Israeli army and founded his own theater company in Tel Aviv in 1961. He was also involved in founding the Haifa Municipal Theater . He found his star role in the depiction of the milkman Tevye in Anatevka ; He also took on this role in the film adaptation of the musical Anatevka , for which he received a Golden Globe Award and - as the first Israeli actor ever - an Oscar nomination. He played this role on several tours that took him around the world and was ultimately nominated for the Tony Award . In the new millennium he resumed the role of his life for tours in Australia and New Zealand as well as a farewell tour that began in 2009.

In addition, Topol played in several productions in his home country, several times in collaboration with Ephraim Kishon - who gave him a literary monument in the book Kein Applaus für Podmanitzki (1973) with the satirical story Des Fiedler's Curse - and international films.

His best known films, however, are The Giant's Shadow (1966), starring Kirk Douglas and John Wayne, and the 1981 James Bond film On A Deadly Mission , where he starred alongside Roger Moore .

Topol has been married to actress Galia Topol since 1956; the two children Ady and Anat Topol are also active in this profession. In 2015 Chaim Topol was awarded the Israel Prize .
