Ivan Fíla , also Ivan Fila , (born December 24, 1956 in Prague ) is a Czech director , screenwriter and film producer .

Life

Fíla, who came to the Federal Republic of Germany from Czechoslovakia in 1977 , first studied directing and screenwriting in Cologne . He then began making documentaries and short films before making his feature film debut in 1996 with the film Lea . Lea premiered at the Venice Film Festival and won the OCIC Award there. In addition to other international film prizes, including two Bohemian Lions , Lea was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film for the Golden Globe Awards , and for Best Newcomer at the European Film Awards . Lea opened the door to Hollywood for Fíla , where he was commissioned by Steven Spielberg to rewrite the script for The Betty Schimmel Story .

His film King of Thieves premiered at the Moscow Film Festival in 2004 and won, among other things, the Prix d´Or for the best European screenplay and a total of four Bohemian Lions. Prince of Thieves was also the Oscar nomination of Slovakia for the best foreign language film .

In addition to feature films, Fíla also made documentaries such as "Vaclav Havel - A Bohemian Fairy Tale", "Hitler - The Blackmailer" or "Joschka Fischer", which were broadcast on ZDF and ARTE , among others . He is currently working on his English-language cinema project "Bella Luna", a romantic comedy.

In August 2018 his novel “The man who stood in the way” (“ Muž, který stál v cestě ”) was published. The work, which was published on the 50th anniversary of the Prague Spring , deals with the life of the doctor and politician František Kriegel and became a bestseller in the Czech Republic.

Fíla lives in Frankfurt , Los Angeles and Prague .
