Aleksandar "Saša" Petrović (born January 14, 1929 in Paris , † August 20, 1994 ibid) was a Yugoslav film director .

Life

Petrovic studied at the University of Belgrade and then worked as a film critic. In 1966, his film Tri (Three) was nominated for an Oscar for best foreign film. In 1967 he received another Oscar nomination for I even met happy Gypsies ( "Skupljaci perja", literally spring collectors , known internationally as I Even Met Happy Gypsies , with Bekim Fehmiu ), for which he Jury Prize at the Great Cannes Film Festival awarded . In 1972 he filmed Mikhail Bulgakov's novel The Master and Margarita . In 1973, under pressure from the government, he had to stop teaching at the Belgrade Film Academy. In German-speaking countries he is known for his group picture with lady (1977, with Romy Schneider ), the film adaptation of Heinrich Böll 's novel of the same name . In Cannes he was nominated four times for the Palme d' Or (1962, 1967, 1969, 1977).
