Bekim Fehmiu
Bekim Fehmiu ( Serbo-Croatian Беким Фехмију / Bekim Fehmiju , born June 1, 1936 in Sarajevo , † June 15, 2010 in Belgrade ) was a Yugoslav actor .
Life
Fehmiu was born in Sarajevo to an Albanian family from Gjakova . He later grew up in Shkodra and especially in Prizren . He was an amateur boxer and studied at the Belgrade Film Academy from 1956 to 1960 . He became famous in the 1960s and 1970s. He starred in many films, especially those made in Italy. In the 1966 film Roj he played the role of Halil Beg , for which he was awarded a prize at the Jugoslovenskog Igranog Filma u Puli Festival in 1966 . He had his breakthrough in 1967 with his role in the film I even met happy gypsies (Skupljači perja) , which received an award in Cannes and was nominated for an Oscar . In the Italian-German-Yugoslav mini-television series Die Odyssey (1968) he played the main role of Odysseus .
Fehmiu went to Hollywood , where he also lived for a while. In John Frankenheimer's film Schwarzer Sonntag (1977) he appeared as Mohammad Fasil alongside Bruce Dern . In the film A Child Named Jesus (1987) he played the role of Joseph .
Now living in Belgrade, he was a sought-after theater actor in the 1980s. In 1987 he interrupted a theater performance to protest against the politics of Slobodan Milošević and then did not appear at the theater again. After that he only played in a few foreign films. He married the Serbian actress Branka Petrić . He has two children; the son Uliks Fehmiu, born in 1968, is also an actor. Bekim Fehmiu suffered early 2010, a stroke and committed in June 2010 suicide .
