occupation

A child by the name of Jesus ( Un bambino di nome Gesù ) is a film from 1987 that tells the childhood of Jesus of Nazareth in the form of a legend .

action

The story begins in a border village between Egypt and Israel , where Joseph and Mary fled after Herod the Great ordered the murder of children in Bethlehem . But the family is still not safe. Sefir, the magician and court astrologer of Herod Antipas, the heir to the throne, knows that a child escaped the massacre. He wants to kill Jesus and plans an assassination attempt. When this fails, Joseph, Mary and Jesus flee towards Alexandria . On the way there, Jesus receives visions from a man who gathers disciples and gives people hope. The almost eight year old boy sees himself in the future. In Alexandria, Joseph finds work in a shipyard. But Sefir is close on their heels.

criticism

The lexicon of international films judged: “A film staged with calm images and with attention to detail, which offers entertainment and information that is challenging but difficult to access for younger children. The wide arc of suspense requires stamina. "

background

The film ties in with some notes from the New Testament natal legends and paints them fictitiously: The material of the film is not mentioned in the Bible .

The film, which is primarily aimed at children, will be less appealing to those expecting a film version of the Gospel . Nevertheless, he describes in detail the socio-political conditions 2000 years ago, the religion of the Jews and other peoples.

Director Franco Rossi filmed on locations in Tunisia and Morocco , and with the talented young actor Matteo Bellina was able to win an excellent leading actor who could portray both a child and God's Son in front of the camera.

Nevertheless, this film cannot build on successes such as " Jesus of Nazareth " by Franco Zeffirelli , because it is not a pure Bible adaptation.

So far, all 4 parts have been shown on German-language television, most recently on KiKA , but so far only the first two parts have appeared on VHS . In December 2011 all four parts were released on DVD .
