Alexandre Joffé (born November 18, 1918 in Alexandria , Egypt or Paris , † August 18, 1995 in Paris) was a French film director , screenwriter and actor . He wrote over 30 screenplays for French films and directed twelve feature films, half of which he starred with the actor and friend Bourvil .

life and work

Alex Joffé, who said he was born in Paris in 1918 , was the son of Russian parents who first worked as a camera assistant at the famous École nationale supérieure Louis-Lumière , a renowned French vocational school for cinema, photography and sound in 85 rue de Vaugirard in Paris Experience, but already worked as an independent screenwriter in 1943 on the film by Jacques Daniel-Norman Ne le criez pas sur les toits . Later in 1946 on the production of Six heures à perdre , he worked as an assistant director next to the film director Jean Lévitte, before he directed his first own film in 1952 with the comedy The mysterious letter .

With the drama Scream of Conscience , starring Michel André, Solange Certain and Susanne Cramer , Joffé also staged more serious subjects from 1955. He shot other dramas in 1957 with "The Merciless" with the cast of Pierre Fresnay and Michel Auclair and in 1959 the crime film Rififi for women with Nadja Tiller and Robert Hossein .

In the prominent comedy Les hussards in 1955, he cast an important role alongside Bernard Blier for the first time with the French comedian and character actor Bourvil - as Flicot. The collaboration led to a real friendship and Joffé and André Bourvil worked together on five other film projects - five more successful comedies: 1960 for Fortunat , 1961 for Freuden der Großstadt , 1962 for Les culottes rouges , 1965 for Die große Kiste and 1968 for Shot drive to San Remo , their last film together.

He worked three times with the French composer Denis Kieffer. Jean Marion contributed two film scores . Other well-known composers who wrote the music for his films were Georges Auric , Paul Misraki , Georges van Parys and Georges Delerue .

For the 1966 Franco-Italian co-production Saturday never with the actor Robert Hirsch , who appeared in 12 different roles in the film, he received a Golden Globe Award nomination in the category Best Foreign Language Film in 1967 .

After the death of his friend Bourvil in 1970, he didn't make a single film.

With the exception of a tiny guest role in Jana Bokova's drama Hôtel du Paradis in 1986, the film chapter was also closed for him. In the past, Joffé had practically only appeared three times in small extras - including in 1960 as a passer-by in François Truffaut's genre classic Shoot the Pianist .

Alex Joffé died on August 18, 1995 in Paris at the age of 76.

What means did you come to the cinema?" - "I started to be a technician. From school on rue de Vaugirard, I was a subcontractor, assistant. Secretary to Jean Aurenche , with whom I was friends, I worked on his scripts, then I wrote my own" .

Original French quote: "Né a Paris á 1918. Premier scenario: Ne le criez pas sur les toits!" ... "Alex Joffé, par quelles voies êtes-vous venu au cinéma ?, par quelles voies êtes-vous venu au cinéma?" - "J'ai commencé par être technicien. Sorti de l'école de la rue de Vaugirard, j'ai été opérateur, assistant. Secrétaire de Jean Aurenche, dont je suis devenu l'ami, j'ai collaboré à ses scénarios, puis j'ai écrit moi-même, travaillant à mon propre compte "."
