action

The film is set in the Siberian hinterland immediately after the end of World War II . Russians and Germans suffered from the war and processed different personal experiences. The main character is the engine driver Ignat, who comes to a village of Russian forest workers. Outwardly, he embodies the symbol of the victorious Soviet soldier who, however, is in reality deeply shocked and sick by his experiences. When he learns of a locomotive that is on an island, he swims through the river to fetch it. There he meets Elsa, a German girl who lived alone in the forest for four years after she fled from Russian police officers. Her father once built the bridge and was arrested after it was destroyed by ice drift . Elsa is given the choice of rebuilding the bridge with Ignat or of dying. They bring the locomotive to the village.

A dangerous race through the Siberian forests is now being contested with this locomotive, in which the protagonists not only risk their own lives, but also those of others, regardless of any losses. An important role is played by some German railway engineers who came there before the war began and are now being held hostage. The two different cultures, each characterized by the totalitarianism of their society, contest a similar competition as the two train drivers, who also have to struggle with the elements of the Siberian taiga . So the current of the river gives them difficulties. It is a film about love, courage, honor and the question of what you have to achieve in order to be proud of yourself.
