Alexei Efimowitsch Uschitel ( Russian Алексей Ефимович Учитель ; born August 31, 1951 in Leningrad ) is a Russian film director and producer.

life and work

Alexei Utschitel was born in 1951 to the documentary film director Jefim Utschitel . In 1975 he graduated from the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography and began working for the Leningrad Documentary Film Studio. In 1991 he founded his own film studio called Rok .

He made his debut as a feature film director in 1996 with the film Manija Schiseli ( Мания Жизели , Giselles Wahn), which tells of the life of the dancer Olga Spessiwzewa . His second feature film, Dnewnik jewoscheny ( Дневник его жены , The Diary of His Wife ), was released in 2000 and is about the last years of life of the writer Ivan Bunin . Uchitel received the Russian film award Nika for Dnewnik evoscheny . For his film Progulka (Прогулка, The Walk ), he was awarded the “Special Prize for Outstanding Artistic Achievement” at the Cottbus Film Festival . In 2008 Alexei Utschitel won the main prize for the best film at the same festival with the film Plenny ( Пленный , German title: Captured ).

In spring 2014 Uchitel was one of the signatories of an appeal by cultural workers in the Russian Federation to support President Putin's policies in Ukraine and on the Crimean Peninsula .

In autumn 2017 there were numerous, predominantly religiously motivated protests against Uchitel's film Matilda in Russia , whereupon several cinema chains announced that they would not show the film for security reasons.
