Hendrik Verschuring

Hendrik Verschuring (* 1627 in Gorinchem , Gorkum ; † April 26, 1690 before Dordrecht ) was a Dutch painter.

Life

His father was an infantry officer. The weak constitution prevented Hendrik Verschuring from becoming a soldier. At the age of 13 he became a student of the portrait painter Dirk (Theodor) Goverts and later of the landscape painter Jan Both in Utrecht . After six years of training, he went to Rome to study further at the academy. He returned to Gorinchem in 1653, where he was elected mayor in 1662.

Critics praised his landscapes, but his strength was battle paintings, especially his depictions of fighting cavalry. The war of 1672 - where the Gorinchem battlefield was also - gave him many examples.

The painter Mattheus Wytmans is one of his students .

family

His son Wilhelm (1657–1715) - pupil of his father and of Jan Verkolie - was initially also a painter, but then continued to work as a merchant.
