Stolen Kisses (Original title: Baisers volés ) is a film by François Truffaut from 1968 with Jean-Pierre Léaud and Claude Jade in the leading roles.

It is the third film in Truffaut's five-part Antoine Doinel cycle .

action

The young Antoine Doinel wants to escape a permanent fixation on girlfriend Christine Darbon. He left the army before the end of his three-year service after spending a long time in detention due to discipline issues. He learns from Christine's parents that she has boycotted classes at the conservatory because of the dismissal of the director (a parallel to the Henri Langlois affair ) and that she has gone away to do winter sports. His future father-in-law was able to get Antoine a job as a night porter in a hotel in Montmartre that same day. A little later Christine visits him there. It becomes clear that she cares about him, but is also much nicer to him than he is to her. They arrange to meet. Antoine loses his job quite quickly because he falls for a private detective, so he leads the detective and his client into the room of the wife and her lover.

However, the investigator quickly gave him a post at the Blady detective agency. Antoine proudly reports about it to Christine and her father. When he returns a tender kiss from Christines with a passionate kiss in the Darbons' wine cellar, she fends off him. Even his new job as a detective overwhelmed Antoine: When he went to a vaudeville theater with Christine, where he was supposed to shadow the magician who was performing there, Antoine left his girlfriend in astonishment to pursue the man, but soon lost his track. Blady considers the daydreamer unsuitable for observation and now sets Antoine on a seemingly easy case: he is employed in Monsieur Tabard's business and as an undercover investigator to find out why he is not loved by anyone. Antoine's interest in Christine, in whose two-year relationship there has not yet been any intimacy, diminishes in the following years, because he soon falls in love with the much older Madame Tabard and leaves Christine on the grounds that he had never admired her. Madame Tabard and Antoine have a brief affair that leads to another resignation of Antoine.

He now finds work in a television repair service and collides with his company car, of all things, with Christine's father's car. Christine, who has been followed unnoticed by a stranger for a long time, has not lost interest in him despite Antoine's rejection and tries to visit him, but stands in front of a closed door. Since she now knows where the young man works from her father, she resorted to a ruse: when she had the house to herself for a weekend, she manipulated the television set, called Antoine's company, and Antoine's company promptly came to the known one Address. The next morning they both sit at the breakfast table. François Truffaut initially put a clique at the side of his alter ego Antoine Doinel; one member was Christine Darbon. Before the cast with Claude Jade , the character of Christine was not yet fully developed, as the first treatment shows: "We will examine all of this again, as this personality will be completely changed according to the young actress we choose for it." After Truffaut At the Théâtre Moderne, 19-year-old Claude Jade had discovered, he changed the script and she became the protagonist. Truffaut was "carried away by her beauty, her character, her manners and her joie de vivre". If the love between Antoine and Christine is the guiding principle of the film, Truffaut's co-authors Claude de Givray and Bernard Revon worked on the detective story.

While working on the film, Truffaut got involved in the fight for the Cinémathèque française . In February 1968 he led the first demonstration, led by Jean-Pierre Léaud and Claude Jade, and the protests seize him. Claude Jade: “François was often late, he missed rehearsals; in the end it's a small miracle that the film turned out so wonderful. ”Truffaut had many scenes improvised, which increased the ease of the narrative.

During the filming, Truffaut fell in love with his leading actress, who was 16 years his junior. He often invited her to his place; As in the film “Stolen Kisses”, the letters came by pneumatic tube. Only after the end of shooting did he confess his love to her, and the two got engaged; In a letter, Truffaut asked Claude Jade's parents for their daughter's hand. The wedding was already being planned, Jean-Claude Brialy and Marcel Berbert were to be the witnesses, but Truffaut withdrew his promise. After the breakup, Truffaut and Jade found each other again as friends and made two more films in the period that followed. Until his death he called her "my third daughter".
