The Secret of the False Bride (Original title: La sirène du Mississipi ) is a French feature film directed by François Truffaut from 1969 with Catherine Deneuve and Jean-Paul Belmondo in the leading roles. Truffaut wrote the screenplay based on the novel Waltz into Darkness by Cornell Woolrich , who wrote under the pseudonym "William Irish".

action

The cigarette manufacturer Louis Mahé, who lives on the island of Réunion , and Julie Roussel get to know each other through a marriage advertisement . Mahé only knows her from letters and from a photo when she arrives in port on the Mississippi liner. In reality, however, the woman is Marion Vergano and she later says that her companion Richard pushed Julie Roussel overboard during the crossing and that she assumed her identity. She explains the false photo by saying that out of modesty she sent a photo to a friend.

Louis and the alleged Julie get married. Louis loves his wife so much that he brushes aside any suspicion that arises until Marion runs away with all of his money. From his supposed sister-in-law - the sister of the real Julie - he is informed about his fatal error. He hires the detective Comolli. However, Louis finds Marion by chance on his own on the Côte d'Azur - and wants to kill her. But he falls in love with her again and they squander his last money - Richard took the stolen money with him.

Comolli appears unexpectedly and wants to hand Marion over to the police. Louis kills him because he wants to keep being with her. They flee to the Alps. When Louis notices that Marion is slowly trying to poison him, he accepts and tells her in the face, whereupon both of them have to realize that they love each other. You want to make a third attempt. It remains to be seen whether they will make it.

background

The film, to which Jean Renoir is dedicated, is based heavily on Hitchcock films and uses motifs from several of his classics, including Vertigo , Marnie and Suspicion . Truffaut admitted, "I would like to admit to the Hitchcock despisers that his films are similar to comic strips, but comic strips are ideal and great."

In 2001 Waltz into Darkness was filmed again under the title Original Sin .

criticism

The film-dienst writes: “An excellently played drama, staged with ambiguous irony, which never wants to be understood as 'reality', rather as a game with ciphers and symbols.” The Protestant film observer judged: “Truffaut's film is poetic in many details crushed by the terrible backstairs story on which it is based.
