The Outrageous (original title: Les Mistons ) is a short film by the director François Truffaut from 1958. The film is based on a novella by Maurice Pons.
action
In the French provinces: five boys who are on the verge of puberty , called Les Mistons , spend a summer watching a young couple, Gerard and Bernadette. Above all, they admire the beauty of Bernadette, who is out of reach for them, and for the first time discover a hint of sexual desire in themselves. The five do not give the couple a quiet minute, partly out of unacknowledged jealousy, partly as children's fun with the desire to annoy others. At the end of the summer, shortly before the lovers are due to get married, Gerard dies in a climbing accident in the mountains. The children then regret their behavior. The story is told and commented on by a narrator who is one of the boys as an adult.
background
The shooting took place in Nîmes and the surrounding area. A longer sequence takes place in the city's ancient Roman theater.
The scene in which Bernadette is taking tennis lessons and is being watched by the boys also cites the silent film L'arroseur arrosé ( The Watered Gardener ) by the Lumière brothers . Truffaut thus refers to his change of role from critic to film director, whose films are now themselves the subject of criticism.
criticism
Jacques Sidier Commenting on the film, "In The Cheeky is already all there, what makes the cinema of François Truffaut: the world of childhood, the pair relations, a lyrical romanticism , a penchant for literature (the commentary comes from the novel by Maurice Pons), the tragedy of life that appears behind children's games. "
Awards
The Outrageous was awarded the prize for directing at the 1958 Brussels International Film Festival.
