The Green Room (Original: La chambre verte ) is a feature film by the French film director François Truffaut from 1977. It is based on motifs by Henry James , in particular the story The Altar of the Dead .

action

The journalist Julien Davenne worked for a provincial magazine after the First World War, where he was mainly responsible for writing obituaries. Many of his friends died in the war and his wife Julie also dies after a short time. He sets up a room at home for all the deceased, where he can talk to them all night long. He meets Cécilia Mandel. She too mourns a dead person. Davenne's green room is almost completely destroyed by a fire. He then bought a chapel and prepared it. He holds devotions for his dead wife, all of his dead friends, and any other dead he worships, especially artists. For Davenne, the dead are more alive than some of the living who surround him every day. Suddenly he realizes that Cécilia is grieving for one of his enemies, Paul Massigny, who, in Davenne's opinion, had once betrayed the common ideals. Davenne and Cécilia split up. Now Davenne has no longer among the living whom he accepts or even wants to see. He gets seriously ill. One last meeting with Cécilia ends with the death of the exhausted Davenne, who dies in Cécilia's arms. Cécilia succeeds Davennes and mourns him and the other dead.

Reviews

film-dienst : A very personal and very subtle representation of the dichotomy between loyalty beyond death and openness to changes and vicissitudes in life.

Kay Wenigers The film's large personal dictionary located in this film "an enchanting story of a love, despite its morbidity, that goes far beyond the death of a loved one ."
