Denys Clerval

Denys Robert Clerval (born September 11, 1934 in Paris , † June 9, 2016 in France ) was a French cameraman.

Live and act

Denys Clerval received his professional training between 1953 and 1955 at the École de la rue de Vaugirad; Yves Rodallec , Raymond Sauvaire and Claude Zidi were among his classmates . He then worked as a camera assistant with Sacha Vierny on the classic Hiroshima mon amour by Alain Resnais (1959). At the beginning of the 1960s, Clerval began to photograph short films independently. Clerval's early directors include Claude Guillemot , Jean Vautrin and René Allio , for whom he photographed The Unworthy Old Woman, his first feature film, in 1964. Two early productions by François Truffaut followed in the late 1960s with Robbery Kisses and The Secret of the False Bride .

Other artistically ambitious films were The Riot in the Cervennes and A Hard Day for the Queen by René Allio, The Incredible and Sad Story of the Innocent Eréndira and Her Heartless Grandmother by Ruy Guerra and L'Annonce faite à Marie by Alain Cuny . In 1973/74 Denys Clerval was line producer for two productions dedicated to famous colleagues Henri Alekan and Claude Renoir . Clerval was also active in the French cameramen union AFC (Association française des directeurs de la photographie cinématographique). In 1992 he was elected to the board of directors of this professional organization and remained a member of the AFC until he retired two years later.
