Edward Black
Edward Black (born August 18, 1900 in Birmingham , United Kingdom , † November 30, 1948 in London ) was a British film producer who had made some key productions of Gainsborough Pictures in the 1940s .
Live and act
The son of a theater prophet from Birmingham came across the film industry through his older brothers, who built up a cinema chain. Their second cinema chain was sold to the General Theater Corporation, which in turn was eventually taken over by the British production giant Gaumont-British (GB). Black was hired by the UK and appointed to management by their sister company Gainsborough Pictures in 1928. After working as a production assistant for years (1930 ff.), Edward Black was allowed to make films on his own from the beginning of 1935. His sponsor in those early years was Michael Balcon .
In the following years, Black, often in collaboration with Maurice Ostrer , put together a plethora of Gainsborough films, some of which were commercially very successful, including productions as varied as the historical drama Tudor Rose (1936) and the Alfred Hitchcock thriller classic A Lady Vanishes (1938), but above all inexpensive comedies with appropriately proven actors such as Will Hay and Arthur Askey . During the Second World War, Gainsborough melodramas played in centuries past enjoyed great popularity with war-weary British audiences. Under Black and Ostrer's aegis, Margaret Lockwood , James Mason , Stewart Granger , Phyllis Calvert and John Mills were built to become home screen stars. Black was also considered a former sponsor of Carol Reeds and the directing duo Frank Launder and Sidney Gilliat . In 1944 he left Gainsborough Pictures and joined Alexander Korda . However, until his early death from cancer in 1948, Black hardly appeared as a producer.
