Andrew Jack (born January 28, 1944 as Andrew Hutchinson in London , England , † March 31, 2020 in Chertsey , Surrey , England) was a British dialogue and pronunciation trainer and actor .

life and career

Jack was born the son of actor Stephen Jack and gardener Julia (nee Hutchinson). He graduated from the Central School of Speech and Drama . As an actor, he has appeared with the Royal Shakespeare Company and has appeared on radio and television programs for the BBC. In the 1970s he worked as a flight attendant for six and a half years.

As a dialogue and pronunciation coach, Jack has worked with more than 200 actors since the early 1980s, including Robert Downey Jr. ( Chaplin , Restoration and Sherlock Holmes ), Pierce Brosnan ( Goldeneye , Tomorrow Never Dies and Die Another Day ), Cate Blanchett and Viggo Mortensen . Jack reduced the foreign accents of non-British actors and practiced standard British pronunciation ( Received Pronunciation ) with them . On the other hand, he studied the desired accents or dialects for certain roles, e.g. B. a German accent for Alison Doody as Elsa Schneider in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and for Hugo Weaving (Red Skull), Stanley Tucci (Abraham Erskine) and Toby Jones (Arnim Zola) in Captain America: The First Avenger ; a Russian accent for Izabella Scorupco (Natalya Simonova), Gottfried John (General Ourumov) and Famke Janssen (Xenia Onatopp) in James Bond 007 - Goldeneye ; an American accent for Christian Bale in Batman Begins , Henry Cavill as Napoleon Solo in code name UNCLE, and John Boyega as Finn in the third Star Wars trilogy.

As the lead dialect coach for the films in the Lord of the Rings series, he created and taught the cast of the fictional dialects of the Black and Elven languages of Middle-earth . Jack also designed and taught the accents of the Greeks and Trojans in Wolfgang Petersen's film Troy . Before his death, Jack was working on The Batman, originally announced for June 2021 .

Jack was last seen in front of the camera in the Star Wars films The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi as Caluan Ematt, General of the Resistance. In Solo: A Star Wars Story he voiced the character Moloch. In Sherlock Holmes (2009) he voiced the villain Moriarty.

Jack's first marriage to Felicity Hutchinson, which lasted from 1974 to 1987, resulted in two children. His second wife was the voice trainer Paula Jack from 2000 to 2018 . From 2019 until his death he was married to the voice coach Gabrielle Rogers for the third time. He lived on a houseboat on the Thames .

On March 31, 2020, Andrew Jack passed away as a result of COVID-19 during the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK .
