Young and Innocent ( Young and Innocent ) is a British thriller of director Alfred Hitchcock in the year 1937 .

action

The film star Christine Clay is found dead after she has an argument with her husband - by her American friend Robert Tisdall. Robert Tisdall runs to get help and is watched by two women who then tell the police that he ran away from the crime scene. The police promptly suspect him of strangling Clay with the belt of a coat. There is also a prejudice in the press. However, Robert cannot prove his innocence because his own coat has previously been stolen from him. The police tried to give him answers when questioned. He escapes in the courthouse and tries to win the police director's daughter, Erica Burgoyne, as an ally.

After he snuck into her vehicle, she first abandons him in an abandoned country house. But then she gets pity and provides him with food. Robert convinces her of his innocence and at the same time tries to build a love relationship with her. Their mutual escape in the car leads them indirectly to Old Will, who owns the coat - but without a belt. Old Will is a homeless man who was given the coat. He still remembers that the giver kept blinking his eyes. Erica is now caught by the police, but her father releases her. He is stepping down from his position as Chief Constable. Erica goes on a search for the belt with Old Will.

A trail leads them to the “Grand Hotel”, where they suspect the murderer. The only thing they know about him is that he keeps blinking his eyes. The wanted man actually plays in a band in the hotel ballroom. He realizes that they are on his way and has a nervous breakdown, whereupon he confesses to the murder. It is the man who was murdered.

background

Hitchcock's early work Young and Innocent , which is based to some extent on the novel A Shilling for Candles by Josephine Tey , fits in well with the British films of the creative phase before 1939, even if it was never very well known. Many details already indicate how Hitchcock's style would develop. The film is peppered with humor and ambiguous scenes and also shows a very clever build-up of tension. The motif of the innocent persecuted appears again in several of Hitchcock's later films.

The long shot in the “Grand Hotel” is particularly unusual. It first wanders over what is happening in the hall as a long shot , then goes to the band playing with a camera crane and enlarges more and more of the drummer's eyes, who finally start to blink. This tracking shot begins at a distance of 145 feet (44.2 m) and ends four inches (about 10.2 cm) in front of the eyes. The shot was shot within two days and its design is reminiscent of a similar scene from Hitchcock's later feature film Notorious , which begins with the recording of a party and ends with a close-up of a key. Also noteworthy is the song played in Jung und Innocent , which is about the "drummer man" (drummer) and thus refers to the murderer.

In a humorous scene, the two "heroes" run away in the middle of a children's birthday party and have to endure all silliness in order not to betray themselves. This scene, which is important for building tension, has been removed in the US version.

In the US, the film was called The Girl Was Young .

Despite an unusually large number of Hitchcock films that have been dubbed in German several times, this one is the only one that has its own GDR dubbed version.

The film was first shown on German television on November 21, 1978 on ZDF .

Cameo

After about 14 minutes of filming, Hitchcock is standing with a camera at the entrance to the justice building (see also cameo ).

Reviews

"Exciting, very humorous detective film that shows Hitchcock already at the height of his ability."

“All in all, the film may be a reserved Hitchcock, but it has that certain touch. Not only was he the master of suspense , and young and innocent proved that his talent for the frugal and fast-paced thriller comedy was unique. In reality it is still unmatched. "

- Paul Bryant

"The film has a more laid-back vibe than most of Hitchcock's previous thrillers, thanks in part to the charm of lead actor Derrick De Marney, and anticipates the successful dash of comedy and suspense contained in A Lady Vanishing ."

- Mark Duguid
