Bernard Knowles

Bernard Knowles (born February 20, 1900 in Manchester , † February 12, 1975 in Taplow , Buckinghamshire ) was a British cameraman and film director .

Life

Bernard Knowles worked as a press photographer in the USA after the First World War . After returning to his home country, he worked his way up through the positions of camera assistant and cameraman to the position of chief cameraman and photographed for directors such as Herbert Wilcox , Victor Saville and Berthold Viertel , but above all for Alfred Hitchcock , for his most famous films still made in Europe he was responsible as a cameraman. From the mid-1940s, Knowles was also active as a director, although his usually undemanding entertainment films were much more popular with audiences than with film critics. From the early 1950s, Knowles was mainly active in television and only occasionally worked for the cinema.
