action

In the Berlin branch of the World Health Organization. The doctors and scientists Frank Overton and Helen Wieland are currently doing deep-freeze research. You are about to successfully complete a revolutionary series of tests designed to preserve and prolong human life through freezing. As a result, Overton and Wieland are certain that in the future the age of the human being can be extended at will: the human being will be frozen, his vital functions retained by means of connected equipment, and thawed again as required. The first tests with chimpanzees were successful. Finally, Dr. Overton does the litmus test: despite massive concerns from Sir Keith, who was involved in the series of tests, he wants to freeze himself to see whether this complicated plan actually works.

While his research career is obviously very successful, the same cannot be said for his marriage. He and his cynical wife Joan, a blonde fashion journalist who likes to drink alcohol, have become estranged and often quarrel, not least because of Frank's close collaboration with Helen. While he is immersed in his work in the laboratory, she first goes out with the alert journalist Tony Stein and probably also strangers. One day Joan Overton is found shot dead; Frank Overton is immediately suspected. But it is just frozen at minus 40 degrees, as explained to the arriving Berlin police inspector Prentow during a visit to the research facility. So he couldn't be the culprit. But Prentow does not believe this "alibi". Nobody but Tony knows the truth, because in the moment of alcohol-induced euphoria, Joan had drawn the gun in front of his eyes and shot herself in the chest. Helen also assumes that her colleague Overton must have shot his wife, as she heard a shot in his apartment when she last called him. The shot had gone off when Joan had fiddled with the gun in front of her husband without anyone being injured. Despite her considerable doubts about Frank's innocence, Helen Wieland gives him the alibi of having been frozen at the time of the crime.

Meanwhile, Helen Wieland's activities as part of Overton's self-experiment are in the crucial phase. Police Inspector Prentow can see for himself how Overton has been hooked up to the equipment and temporarily frozen. In the half-light state, the scientist speaks briefly to Helen about his wife Joan. From these words it can be seen that he believes that Joan is still alive. Meanwhile you can see Tony Stein picking up the phone and calling the Berlin Police Vice President. The freezing experiment with Frank is reaching its climax, irregularities and problems arise for a short time. Helen wants to stop the experiment. There's a call to the laboratory. Prentow is put on the phone and hears from his chief at police headquarters that Frank Overton is innocent of his wife's death, as Tony Stein has assured. Overton is being thawed again. Some time later, he and Helen are seen as a happy couple.

Production notes

The film Der Fall X 701 is one of the least known German productions of the entire decade, a mixture of married drama, science fiction story and crime film. Although it was prominently cast and shot in English, the film, which was made in Artur Brauner's CCC studios in Berlin-Spandau in July and August 1964 , was rarely shown - in both German and English-speaking countries. That may have something to do with the fact that the film was generally considered to be very boring. In Great Britain, the strip ran at the end of 1964 under the international distribution title Frozen Alive . Although it is often reported as a German-British co-production, the producing Alfa-Film was the sole producer of Der Fall X 701 - only a collaboration with a German-English company can be proven. It is uncertain whether Case X 701 , which passed the voluntary self-regulation of the film industry on October 13, 1966 , would ever open in German cinemas afterwards; for Austria a first performance can be recorded in December 1966. A few weeks later (from January 22, 1967) the film could also be seen briefly in the USA.

The film constructions come from the hand of Hans-Jürgen Kiebach , the costumes from Vera Mügge . Götz-Dieter Wulf was the production manager, Peter Hahne was the production manager.

criticism

In the lexicon of international films it says: "Routine, not very exciting mixture of marriage and crime drama."

Individual evidence

  1. incorrectly, it is usually referred to as a German-British co-production, but this is not the case. There was only a collaboration with Creole Filmproduktion (Berlin + London), which was founded especially for this film, and which had subsequently not been involved in any other film.
