Percy Garfield Marmont (born November 25, 1883 in London , † March 3, 1977 in Northwood , United Kingdom ) was a British actor .

Life

Marmont had already had some successes on London stages since the turn of the century and had also gone on theater tours that took him to South Africa (from 1913) and Australia (1917). It was here that Marmont made his regular film debut in 1917, who the year before had appeared in front of the camera for the first time as an extra in a South African production. In the same year Marmont reached the United States and made his debut on a US stage on Broadway in New York. The following year, Marmont went to Los Angeles, where he continued his film work. Percy Marmont was initially given roles of noble heroes and romantic lovers, without leaving too much of an impression. With his part as Mark Saber in "When Winter Comes ..." he was able to record his first major success in the USA, two years later (1925) Marmont was seen as the title hero in Victor Fleming's silent film version of Joseph Conrad's " Lord Jim ". Another year later he was the film partner of Clara Bows in " Der Weiberfeind ".

Back in Great Britain in 1928, Percy Marmont continued his film career. Here he played officers, fathers, police inspectors, nobles, cardinals and other respected people. Percy Marmont also appeared three times in Alfred Hitchcock's films in the 1930s . Marmont went to France in 1937 for the little part of Cardinal Wolsey in Sacha Guitry'sThe Pearls of the Crown ”. Over the course of this decade, Percy Marmont returned to the stage and only appeared sporadically and at longer intervals in films - rarely in leading roles, mostly in supporting roles. In the 1950s he could also be seen in one or the other television production. After ten years of abstinence from the camera, the elderly artist returned in front of the camera for the last time in 1968 with the role of judge Sir Matthew Gregory in the Ray Milland crime film " Hostile Witness - Captured on the Net ".
