action
Raquel has worked as a maid and nanny for the Pilar and Mundo family for over 20 years. The lonely woman has her 41st birthday and can't be happy about it. She suffers from severe headaches every day and Pilar tells her on her birthday that she wants to hire a second housemaid, as Raquel can no longer keep the big house in order alone. But Raquel does not tolerate anyone by her side. The young Peruvian Mercedes feels this on her first day at work. Raquel locks the girl out and disappears Camila's kitten, which Mercedes should take care of. Mercedes cannot withstand the pressure and leaves the family. The old Sonia is supposed to put Raquel in her place and is now put by her side. But also Sonia is locked out by Raquel. However, Sonia doesn't let herself get down so easily and fights with Raquel. Nevertheless, she also leaves the house. Once again everything is going on as before. When Raquel becomes faint, the family hires Lucy. The new hiring means that Raquel gets back to work quickly despite her health problems. Again she tries to get rid of her competitor and locks her out. But Lucy is different. She uses her involuntary free time to sunbathe in the garden. The fun-loving Lucy befriends Raquel. Raquel experiences friendship and affection for the first time in her life. Lucy invites her new friend to her family's Christmas celebrations. There she experiences the affection of a man for the first time through Lucy's uncle Eric. But this overwhelms Raquel, who has never slept with a man. She returns to Santiago de Chile early . Some time later, Lucy announces that she wants to return to her family and will leave the house. Raquel is bitterly disappointed and closes herself again to her environment. Until one day she decides to live her life like Lucy. She puts on sportswear and, like Lucy, decides to go jogging in the evening.
Awards
The film has been shown and awarded at numerous festivals. It was first shown at the Sundance Film Festival 2009 and received the jury award for best foreign feature film. Leading actress Catalina Saavedra won a special jury prize for her portrayal. Catalina Saavedra received other acting awards at the festivals in Biarritz , Cartagena , Havana , Huelva , Miami , Santa Cruz and Toronto . The film was also nominated for the 2010 Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
criticism
“Director Sebastian Silva (tries) to make a moving drama, at various film festivals he apparently exactly met the taste of the jury. But in the end, the authentically and simply recorded film is accompanied by too many questions and peculiarities that simply leave the plot with too little authenticity. As a result, the drama loses quality and persuasiveness. "
