Klaus Härö (born March 31, 1971 in Porvoo ) is a Finnish film director .

Life

He studied directing at the Helsinki School of Art and Design , where he attended several seminars on screenwriting. After graduating, he was involved in several short and television films. At the Berlinale 2000 , his short film Nattflykt was awarded a Transparent Bear .

His first feature film was released in 2002 with Elina , a children's film about a girl from a poor family who mourns her late father. This was Finland's candidate for an Oscar nomination in the category Best Foreign Language Film in 2004 and was successful at numerous film festivals, including the 2003 Berlinale . In 2005 the film The Best Mother (Äideistä parhain) was made , which takes place in World War II and was also selected by Finland as a candidate for an Oscar nomination, while leading actress Maria Lundqvist received the Swedish Guldbagge film award.

Two years later, he worked again with Lundqvist on the drama Den nyaomanniskan (2007), which takes on the subject of forced sterilization , which was legally practiced in Sweden from 1935 to 1976 . In the film, which is set in 1951, Julia Högberg plays the leading role of the young Gertrud, who comes from an extended family and is transferred to a state home. There the naive girl and other inmates from poor backgrounds, the mentally ill and epilepsy patients are prepared for the procedure before a liaison with the local groundskeeper and a pregnancy lead to a dramatic turnaround. Den nyaariuskan received an award at the Shanghai International Film Festival in 2007 and was nominated three times for the 2008 Guldbagge Awards a year later.
