action
The young would-be gangster Sing arrives with his fat friend Gu in the small settlement “Residenz Schweinestall” and pretends to be a member of the dreaded “ax gang”. Sing hopes that this will show respect from the residents of the settlement, but this project fails miserably. A group of real members of the "ax gang" happens to come by and help the desperate Sing because they think he is one of them. It turns out that there are three very powerful kung fu fighters living in the settlement ready to protect their friends. The group calls for reinforcements and the three kung fu fighters fight the entire "ax gang". After the "ax gang" was defeated by the three fighters, Sing flees.
After his escape, Sing meets the deaf and mute and pretty ice cream seller Lollipop Girl Fong, whom he then robs.
She lets him rob her because she knows Sing from her childhood. Sing had tried to protect her as a child and remembered it. After all, she fell in love with him too. Sing remembers what he did, but tries to forget it, as the attempt to help was a fiasco for him and he is ashamed of it. He prefers to focus more on his criminal career, believing that only the "bad guys" can get whatever they want.
While Sing is now trying to ingratiate himself with the "ax gang", the latter engages a killer duo who are supposed to take revenge on the "pigsty residence". The duo defeats and kills the three kung fu fighters, but then the two landlords of the “Residenz Schweinestall” also reveal themselves as kung fu masters and defeat the killer duo, which then fled. When their tenants reproach why they didn't fight earlier, they respond that they made an oath not to fight since their son died in a kung fu fight. They have now broken this vow.
The "ax gang" does not give up and swears revenge. With Sing's help, “The Beast” is freed from psychiatry. The beast is considered the best, undefeated killer, whose only goal is to find his master who can defeat him. It comes to the fight against the two kung fu masters, which the beast seems to win. But Sing, now a member of the "Axt Gang", intervenes and helps the landlord couple to escape, but is themselves almost fatally wounded. The couple escapes with Sing.
Finally, the head of the gang freaks out and insults the "beast" for his incompetence. This then kills him. The "ax gang" is now without a leader and needs a new leader. The beast eventually becomes the new leader of the "ax gang".
The two kung fu master supply during which the most severely wounded Sing in hiding within their "residence" after it first to a him Buddha - Shrine brought, but he did not die there. In the hiding place, the two discover that Sing is the "one among millions" who is blessed with the necessary talent for Kung Fu and could therefore have a chance against the beast. The injuries the beast inflicted on him release his powers and he heals himself overnight.
The next morning all members of the "ax gang" appear with their new leader, the beast, and there is his last showdown against Sing in front of the "Residenz Schweinestall" . In this final fight the whole gang is defeated and ultimately also "that Beast "defeated. He finally submits to Sing, since he has now found his true master. After the “ax gang” collapsed, Sing and his fat friend Gu ended their “criminal career” and opened a candy store. Sing and his childhood sweetheart, the ice cream seller, finally get together in front of the shop.
criticism
“Largely enjoyable martial arts comedy, which celebrates its thin plot with a technical skill and good actors. The digital effects reinforce the comic character of the film. "
background
- The "ax gang" is based on stories about a gang that is said to have existed in the 1940s. However, there is no evidence of this and many consider it a legend.
- The film had great success in Asia and was the most successful feature film in China to date.
- The tailor's actor, Dr. Chiu Chi Ling , is the grandmaster and head of style of the Hung Gar style of southern Shaolin.
- In one scene, the main character meets children playing soccer and says: “No more soccer!” (“Stop playing soccer!”). This is an allusion to Stephen Chow's previous film Shaolin Kickers ("Shaolin Soccer") from 2001, which was lost in the German dubbing. There he just says: “I can do another trick!” And kicks the football to pieces.
- When Donut dies, he says the words " In great power lies great responsibility ", an allusion to the last words Uncle Ben said to Peter Parker aka Spider-Man in the film of the same name.
