Feng Xiaogang ( Chinese  冯小刚 , Pinyin Féng Xiǎogāng ; born March 18, 1958 in Beijing , China ) is a commercially successful Chinese director . He is sometimes compared to Steven Spielberg for his box office hits . He also works as a film producer , actor , screenwriter and set designer .

biography

Feng Xiaogang joined the Chinese People's Liberation Army in 1978 . There he worked in a unit for culture. In 1985 he started working for a television company. He was involved in the artistic creation of several television programs, wrote scripts and directed television chains. In 1991 he became known in China as one of three authors of the "Stories From The Editorial Board (编辑部 的 故事)". One of the other two writers was Wang Shuo . One of the leading roles was played by Ge You, a friend of Feng Xiaogang.

In 1994, Feng Xiaogang first directed a motion picture. The title was Farewell My Love (永 失 我 爱). The plot is based on two novels by Wang Shuo . He also wrote the script together with Feng Xiaogang. The female lead was played by Xu Fan , Feng's future wife.

In 1997 the first so-called New Year's film (贺岁 片), directed by Feng Xiaogang, was released. There are several non-working days in a row during the Chinese New Year . The whole family gathers. New Year's films are tailored to the content of the festival. The film was commercially successful. After that, Feng Xiaogang released other commercially successful New Year's films.

For a few years now there have also been films by Feng Xiaogang with other themes. He has received a lot of awards. In 2013, Feng Xiaogang was the first Chinese director to leave his hand and footprints in front of the TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood.

In 2003 Feng Xiaogang's autobiography was published with the title I Dedicated My Youth to You (我 把 青春 献给 你) . In 2013 he published a volume of essays Don't worry about being spared (不 省心) .

In 2016 he won the Golden Shell of the Festival Internacional de Cine de San Sebastián for Wo Bu Shi Pan Jinlian (English-language festival title: I Am Not Madame Bovary ) . The film adaptation of a novel by Liu Zhenyun focuses on the young woman Li Xuelian (played by Fan Bingbing ), who agrees with her husband to fake a divorce in order to get a second apartment. When her ex-husband married another woman six months later, she began to sue her husband out of anger and went on to crack down on the Chinese legal system for ten years.

In 2017 he was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.

Feng Xiaogang is once divorced and has a daughter from his first marriage. Since 1999 he has been married to the actress Xu Fan , who also frequently plays leading roles in his films.
