François Girard

François Girard (born January 12, 1963 in Saint-Félicien , Québec , Canada ) is a Canadian director and screenwriter .

Life and accomplishments

His grandfather was a musician. His older sister Doris Girard (* 1956) is a film producer. François Girard studied music and started his professional career with music videos . He assisted in the film Die Frau im Hotel (1984) directed by Léa Pool . In the mid-1980s he founded Zone Productions and created short and commercials. He worked with Peter Gabriel on the concert recording Secret World Live (1994) . From the 1990s Girard dared to make movies, for example 32 Variations on Glenn Gould (1993) with Colm Feore in the title role. The best known is his episode film The Red Violin , whose score was awarded an Oscar in 2000 by John Corigliano .
