action

The twelve-year-old Stet, whose mother is an alcoholic , is a behavioral student. The director Ms. Steel, however, recognizes his singing talent and invites the famous boys' choir, National Boychoir, to the school. It enables Stet to audition on this occasion, before which he runs away. When his mother dies in a car accident, his previously unknown father, who was married to another woman at the time of Always birth, wants to deport him to a foster family. The director ( Kathy Bates ) persuades him to put Stet at the choir's boarding school. Despite the rejection of those responsible, this succeeds with the help of a check from the wealthy father.

It is always difficult to integrate into boarding school. He has trouble teaching - can't even read notes - and is noticeable for his naughtiness. Choir director Carvelle therefore accuses him of wasting his talent and sees no future for him in the choir. The director treats him benevolently, however, and choir teacher Wooly asks Carvelle, in view of his undisputed great talent, to include him in the touring choir. Stet lets himself be locked in the boarding school over Christmas because nobody picks him up and uses the time to study and practice. When he was also allowed to sing solo parts, he became a rival for Devon, the best singer in the choir . Finally, Stet gets the uniform for the performances and is allowed to go on tour with the choir. Before an important concert, Devon falls ill and Stet has to sing his solo part. The jealous Devon steals the notes from him, but Stet can perform the aria by heart. When Stet was registered at a boarding school in Switzerland a short time later by his father, who was present at the concert, Carvelle prevented Stet from leaving at the last moment by announcing to the father that in this case he would inform the public about his paternity of Stet .

The choir is invited to a festive concert in New York, in which Handel's demanding work The Messiah is to be performed. Carvelle writes a solo part especially for this, which contains a high "D" as the highest note. Both Devon and Stet manage to sing this very high note. Devon stole the school file and distributed a copied police photo of Stets mother, on which she can be recognized as an alcoholic. When Stet beats up Devon, he is threatened with expulsion from school. With Carvelle demanding the same punishment for Devon and threatening to resign, both stay at the school. Carvelle leaves it open until shortly before the start of the concert which of the two can take over the part.

The solo always sings and is celebrated by the audience. His father, who is present at the concert, finally tells his wife about Stet. Soon afterwards, his voice broke and he was supposed to switch to another school. Surprisingly, his father and his wife pick him up from school and offer him to live with them and his half-sisters in New York.

reception

The film received mostly mixed reviews. At Metacritic , the film received a Metascore of 51/100 based on 10 reviews, and at Rotten Tomatoes , 47 percent of the 40 reviews were positive.

“The story of the rebellious vocal talent and his conflicted relationship with his hard-hearted teacher is quite conventional in its basic features and its course is predictable. But the impressive vocal sequences, the fascinating glimpses behind the scenes of a venerable music academy and Girard's secure, careful hand with which he skilfully circumvents any obvious melodrama make 'Boychoir' a cinematic event worth seeing and listening to. "

- Asokan Nirmalarajah : Filmstarts .de

“This is a film […] that one would have to call almost cynical for its simplicity, if it did not achieve exactly that through the artlessness of its simple images and the simple, thousandfold tried and tested narrative: After these 103 minutes we believe again that music makes humanity better. "

- Manuel Brug : The world

“[...] the film is unfortunately little more than harmless, licked well-being cinema, dripping with pathos and bulging with a lot of clichés regarding group dynamics, exceptional talent and mentoring. The mercilessly predictable development of the plot is particularly disappointing because the script was written by Ben Ripley [...] "
