occupation

Silk is an internationally produced film drama from 2007. It was directed by François Girard , who, together with Michael Golding, wrote the script based on the novel of the same name by Alessandro Baricco .

action

The action takes place in the 19th century. The young Herve Joncour marries the beautiful Helene. When an epidemic wiped out the African silk moths he usually smuggled , he travels to Japan to find a new source of supply. There he meets the local nobleman Hara Jubei and a charming girl.

Joncour receives the caterpillars from Jubei, which he brings to France. The quality of the new silk leads his home village to great prosperity. On his next visit to Japan, Joncour will no longer be treated as a stranger. Rather, he has the opportunity for an erotic rendezvous, not with the girl he desires, but with a familiar, different beauty of the village. She sends him a message which, after returning to France, has a Japanese woman translate it. She herself, as the concubine of the noble ruler, does not give in despite her feelings, because otherwise she would be cast out. In order to still satisfy her desires and show him her love, she arranges to be with the other and while doing so she lingers in front of the door, which is intentionally not completely closed, in order to be able to watch him. Herve understands the arrangement and falls for it all the more.

On his third trip to Japan, there is war and Joncour is sent away by Jubei without seeing the girl again. Reluctantly, he leaves Japan.

One day Herve receives a letter in Japanese, which he also translates again. After the early death of his wife, he learns that the letter was not written by his Japanese lover, but that Helene testified her infinite love to him.

Reviews

Todd McCarthy wrote in Variety magazine on September 13, 2007, the film is boring to sleep (" is a snooze "). He was " thoughtless ", " dreary " and finally " stupid "; the film adaptation of the novel shows neither life nor energy. The " bland " representation of Keira Knightley largely consists of greeting and farewell scenes. Francois Gerard goes to laborious lengths to transform silk into a lengthy, sometimes tiring art film. A very slow film with picturesque images of beautiful landscapes from France and Japan in the 19th century.
