Urga ( Russian Урга ) is a 1991 film by Russian director Nikita Michalkow .
action
The Mongolian shepherd Gombo lives with his wife Pagma, their three children and his mother in a yurt in the steppe, far from the nearest settlement. The Russian driver Sergej ends up in this - alien to him - world when he breaks down with his truck and is warmly welcomed by Gombo's family.
After an initial lack of understanding of the Mongolian culture, u. a. the slaughter of a sheep, the taste of “airag” ( kumys , fermented mare's milk), Gombo and Sergej develop a friendship that deepens during a “shopping trip” to the next town.
There Gombo tries to buy condoms in a pharmacy because the Chinese rulers prescribe birth control. Sergej, on the other hand, would like to do a lot of work again. This leads to his arrest, from which Gombo can "free" him very quickly with the help of a friend. They return relieved. Gombo could not resist the tempting offers of consumer goods and brings a bicycle and a television set, two completely pointless devices in the steppe.
meaning
It's about the friendship of two men from different cultures and about the contrast between the archaic nomadic culture and the industrial society. Symptoms announce that the destruction of untouched nature cannot be stopped.
Awards
Nikita Michalkow received a Golden Lion for the film at the Venice International Film Festival . Urga was nominated in 1993 for the Oscar for " best foreign language film ".
Trivia
The urga is a long stick with a loop at the end. The Mongols use it to capture the animals in the steppe. Those who stick them in the ground don't want to be disturbed during the act of love.
