Sergei Vladimirovich Bodrov
Sergei Wladimirowitsch Bodrow ( Russian Сергей Владимирович Бодров ; born June 26, 1948 in Khabarovsk ) is a Russian film director , screenwriter and producer. His works have been named the best foreign language films for the Oscar several times .
Career
He started out as a journalist and worked for the Soviet satirical magazine Krokodil . In 1974 he graduated from the Moscow Film School , became a screenwriter. He wrote around 30 scripts, mostly comedies. His first feature film was made in 1984 . In the road movie Neprofessionalny ( Eng . The Nonprofessional , 1985) about a Russian rock band, he used a lot of Beatles music without paying royalties .
He became internationally known for socially critical films such as Freedom is a Paradise ( Swoboda eto raj , 1989), for which he was awarded the Wolfgang Staudte Prize at the 1990 Berlinale , and Captured in the Caucasus ( Kawkasski plennik , 1996). The latter was founded in 1996 in Berlin with the European Film Award Felix for the best screenplay award, received the Crystal Globe of the International Film Festival Karlovy Vary , the FIPRESCI Prize of the International Film Festival of Cannes and in 1997 the main Russian Film Award, Nika . It was also nominated for the Golden Globe Award and the Oscar for best foreign language film . In 2008 he was nominated again for an Oscar for his film The Mongol . Work on the continuation of the concept originally planned as a trialogue was stopped in November 2010 with no prospect of resumption.
In 2009 Bodrow was appointed to the jury of the 66th Venice Film Festival . In 2012 he was engaged for the fantasy film Seventh Son , which is based on the bestseller The Spook's Apprentice by Joseph Delaney .
Sergei Bodrow is also a writer, writes stories and feature sections. In 1991 his book Freedom is Paradise was published in France .
Bodrow's recurring themes are the important issues of freedom, friendship and betrayal in Russia. Again and again it is about individuals who are looking for a perspective for their life in the most depressing living conditions.
Bodrow has been married to the American photographer Carolyn Cavallero since 1990, who co-wrote the scripts for three of his films. Since then he has been commuting between Moscow and his second home in Venice Beach , California . He had a son, the film actor and director Sergei Sergeyevich Bodrov . He was killed on September 20, 2002 in an avalanche accident in the Caucasus .
