Mildred Harris, around 1918–1920

Mildred Harris (born November 29, 1901 in Cheyenne , Wyoming , † July 20, 1944 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American film actress .

Life

Mildred Harris was in front of the camera early on and became a child star. Among other things, she played in the series The Wonderful Wizard of OZ by Frank L. Baum and took on more and more leading roles (see films).

Mildred Harris was married three times. Her first husband was Charlie Chaplin , whom she married in 1918. The news caused a scandal as the bride was only sixteen. Her pregnancy - the cause of the quick marriage - turned out to be a false alarm; it is unclear whether Mildred Harris really believed she was pregnant or whether she tried to force Chaplin into marriage with a lie. The only child of Chaplin and Harris, the son Norman Spencer, was born in 1919 with severe deformities and died after three days. The divorce in 1920 turned into a scandal, as Chaplin and Harris accused each other of cruelty and sexual perversion. After the divorce, Mildred Harris had a high-profile affair with the then Prince of Wales , who would become King Edward VIII.

Press attention boosted Harris' career; she got other leading roles, including in The Power of the Press (1928) on the side of Douglas Fairbanks . Harris was also able to build on her earlier successes with the emergence of talkies, although she - like many other silent film actors - was initially uncomfortable with the new medium. Harris had one of her best-known appearances in the film adaptation of the musical No, No, Nanette (1930).

Mildred Harris, 42, died of pneumonia in 1944 and was buried in Hollywood Forever Cemetery . She received a star in the Motion Pictures category on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
