The InterContinental Hotels Group PLC (IHG) is a British company based in Denham in London and by number of rooms, the largest hotel chain in the world. The largest corporate division is the Holiday Inn Express hotel chain .

history

The company InterContinental Hotels & Resorts was founded in 1946 as a subsidiary of Pan Am founded. The first house was built in Belém . The Holiday Corporation was formed from the first Holiday Inn founded in Memphis, Tennessee in 1952 .

In 1989 the Holiday Corporation was taken over by the British Bass PLC . Nine years later, Bass also bought InterContinental and transformed into what is now IHG. The German Helmut Hoermann , who was poached by Westin Hotels & Resorts , became President and Chief Operating Manager from 1989 to 2006 .

The Holiday Inn brand hotels account for the largest share with almost 1,350 hotels and almost 250,000 beds. The majority of these hotels are franchised , i.e. run independently using the brand name and distribution system. Until the exit in December 2005, IHG was the largest shareholder in the British beverage manufacturer Britvic with 47.5% of the shares .

IHG maintains a customer loyalty program called "Priority Club", which was launched in July 2013 under the name "IHG Rewards Club" and now has more than 100 million members.

In 2014 IHG announced that it would take over Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants .

The InterContinental Hotels & Resorts brand is represented in three major cities in Germany: Berlin , Düsseldorf and Frankfurt.

The VERTICAL GALLERY, curated by Werner Lippert , has been organized in the InterContinental in Düsseldorf since 2009 . FC Gundlach , Esther Haase , Michael Dannenmann, Armin Morbach and Horst Wackerbarth exhibited some of their works there. In 2013 the exhibition concept (temporary art exhibition by local photographers in the vertical) was awarded the "Medici Needle", an initiative of the Art City of Düsseldorf.

#LightsofLove Initiative of the InterContinental Frankfurt during the COVID-19 pandemic 2020

The Frankfurter Haus generated media attention with its COVID-19 statement in the form of the #LightsofLove initiative in spring 2020 and thus also set a clear signal for the Main metropolis of Frankfurt.

The pandemic hit the hospitality industry in all hotel categories worldwide. In order to adapt to the new regulations for hotel operations and to the expectations of travelers, the Clean Promise program was specially developed and rolled out.

IHG operates 101 hotels in Germany, including three InterContinental Hotels & Resorts , seven Crowne Plaza , five Indigo Hotels, a Regent Hotel and several Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express .

criticism

The campaign PutzfrauenPower of the Action against Labor Injustice protested from 2016 against wage theft of cleaning workers in the Hotel InterContinental Düsseldorf by subcontractors , which led to several proceedings before the Düsseldorf Labor Court.

In 2007, IHG and two other hotel chains received the Big Brother Award from the data protection organization “ Digitalcourage eV ” for their lax handling of customer data .
