The InterContinental Davos is a hotel opened in 2013 in Davos , Switzerland . It is also called the Golden Egg because of its characteristic shape and color . It is located in the Stilli area on the northeastern outskirts of Davos near the road to the Flüelapass .

history

The hotel stands on the site of the former Basel sanatorium in a slightly elevated position at the foot of the Seehorn. The high altitude clinic for tuberculosis sufferers, later for other respiratory diseases, was in operation from 1896 to 1985 and was canceled in 2007.

The hotel project on the 20,274 m² area was developed by Stilli Park AG. The client and owner of the hotel until the end of 2019 was a Credit Suisse real estate fund , which agreed a lease agreement with Stilli Park AG for the operation of the house. This in turn entered into a management contract with the InterContinental Hotels Group .

In 2006 a first draft of a hotel building by the architect Matteo Thun was presented. The design of this study influenced the later realized execution by the architects of the Munich-based Oikios GmbH, which was founded in 2007 by Oliver Hofmeister, a former architect of Matteo Thun. There were big differences in the facade design of the two designs. Matteo Thun suggested a comparatively simple wooden facade, while Oikios developed the sensational, diagonally structured metal cladding. The architecture of the Hilton Garden Inn hotel in Davos was also designed by Oikios.

In addition to Oikios, who is responsible for the design, the Davos-based Baulink AG was commissioned to carry out the construction. This formed a joint venture with Toneatti AG, Bilten, as a general contractor . After the construction period from April 2011 to November 2013, the hotel went into operation on December 19, 2013.

Bankruptcy of the operating company

Almost half a year after the opening, on June 2nd, 2014, the operating company Stilli Park AG filed for bankruptcy . On the same day, Weriwald AG, founded two weeks earlier, took over the hotel operations and continued to run it without interruption. The bankruptcy of the operator after such a short time and the seamless replacement by a successor company sparked controversy about the background of these processes. It was also announced that Stilli Park AG paid a monthly rent of 405,000 francs to Credit Suisse.

Sale to the Aevis Victoria Group

On November 27, 2019, Aevis Victoria SA announced the purchase of several hotel properties from the Credit Suisse real estate fund. The InterContinental Davos is one of the hotels that changed hands on January 1, 2020. The namesake and flagship of the Aevis Victoria Group is the Hotel Victoria-Jungfrau in Interlaken .

Hotel classification

The InterContinental in Davos does without the formal classification as a 5-star hotel. This is justified with a guideline from companies in the pharmaceutical and medical technology industry, which forbids it to accommodate doctors in luxury hotels . Medical congresses are held regularly in Davos.

Architecture and construction

The complex consists of the oval, 40 meter high main building with 216 double rooms and suites and the two lower buildings in front with 38 apartments , which are connected to the hotel underground. The basement contains the lobby and lounge , event rooms for up to 1,000 guests, two restaurants and a shop , as well as a spa area with indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, treatment rooms and a fitness room. The top floor on the 10th floor houses a gourmet restaurant . In the basement there is an underground car park with 108 spaces.

From an architectural point of view, in addition to the unusual oval shape of the main building, the design and construction of the metal facade stands out. Over 62,000 individual parts were used for the 791 wave-shaped parapet elements and the dome on the roof. Each balustrade element is unique in its dimensions, but has an identical steel rib construction inside. The planking was done with steel sheets 3 millimeters thick. Most of the elements are around 1.6 mx 4.5 m in size, some are up to 14.6 m long. The elements of the German facade specialist seele were manufactured in Pilsen , Czech Republic , placed in individually adapted transport frames and shipped to Davos, where they were assembled within six months. The same company also manufactured the facade structure of the National Stadium in Beijing , known as the Bird's Nest .

The eye-catcher in the lobby is the 28-meter-long, wave-shaped light installation Wave Chandelier by Moritz Waldemeyer. The light from blue and white LEDs is guided from the ceiling via glass fibers to the 1,400 glass spheres.
