John Thaw
John Edward Thaw (born January 3, 1942 in Manchester , Greater Manchester , † February 21, 2002 in Luckington , Wiltshire ) was a British actor .
Life
After graduating from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), his first role was that of Sergeant John Mann in the television series Redcap . He then played a police officer in the series The Foxes , which was to be repeated in Inspector Morse, Oxford Homicide Squad between 1987 and 2000. For his role as Inspector Morse, he received a British Academy Television Award in 1990 and 1993 , and was nominated for two more in 1991 and 1992. Director Richard Attenborough cast Thaw in two of his films: Freedom Cry (1987) and Chaplin (1992).
From 1964 to 1968 he was married to Sally Alexander, an active feminist and professor at London's Goldsmiths College . The actress Abigail Thaw comes from the marriage . After the divorce, the second marriage to actress Sheila Hancock followed until Thaw's death in 1973 . The daughter from this marriage, Joanna Thaw, is also an actress.
