Reviews

Daniel M. Kimmel wrote in Variety magazine on August 29, 1994 that the "great" costumes and sets had more substance than the plot and characters. Phoebe Cates seems charming, but "far too modern" for the role played.

The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was a "friendly, but also irrelevant comedy that gave away the charm and mystery of its subject". The film magazine Cinema wrote that the film was a "beautifully photographed, historically documented" and "verve comedy with good actors".

The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating "valuable".
