series

The first season is based to a large extent on the first volume of the book series ( Leviathan awakes ) and was broadcast on Syfy from December 14, 2015 to February 2, 2016 , with the first episode being released in advance as a stream on November 23, 2015 . In Germany, the broadcast on Netflix will start on September 8, 2017. In May 2018 SyFy announced that it did not want to order a fourth season. The production company Alcon Entertainment was trying to find another partner for the broadcast of future seasons. Two weeks later, Jeff Bezos announced that Amazon would take over the further production of the series from the fourth season. The German-language fourth season was published on December 13, 2019 by Amazon Prime Video .

Executive producers include Mark Fergus , Hawk Ostby , Andrew A. Kosove, and Broderick Johnson , among others . Both Abraham and Franck are involved in the production. The Oscar -nominated screenwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk duo Ostby has written the script of the pilot episode.

In Germany and Austria, the SVoD provider Netflix has been offering the first season of the series since November 3, 2016 via its platform. The second season has been available on Netflix since September 8, 2017. After the takeover by Amazon, the series was withdrawn from Netflix on September 30, 2018.

On July 27, 2019 it was announced that a 5th season would be produced with Amazon.

Background story

The series takes place in the 24th century. Humanity has colonized parts of the solar system , including the moon and Mars , and there are other colonies and space stations scattered throughout the system . Politically, however, there are considerable tensions. On earth, overpopulated with over 30 billion people and suffering from elevated sea levels, the United Nations (UN) has risen to become a world government that also controls the moon and several stations in the solar system. Most of the residents ( Terran in the German version ) have no job due to the large population and are dependent on basic state services for their everyday lives. There are slums and slums in big cities like New York City . Furthermore, the earth suffers from significant environmental problems, such as rising sea levels, although the UN is raising considerable funds to counteract the damage. Yet the Terran corporations are the wealthiest in the system.

Mars, which was colonized in the 21st century, has won its independence from Earth (official name Martian Congressional Republic ) and has considerable military potential, so that there is a stalemate . The Martians are a very focused and independent people. Many look down on Terrans who they consider lazy and spoiled. This is not least due to the living conditions on Mars, where the terraforming process will continue for over a century. Martian cities are accordingly sealed off and partly laid out underground. The population is much smaller than that of Earth, but Mars, despite some technological advantages, does not have the industrial capacities of the Terrans.

Both Earth and Mars are in dire need of resources from the asteroid belt . The so-called Gürtler (English belter ) operate asteroid mining , but suffer from poor working and living conditions (clean air and water are often not available) and show physical deformations due to the force of gravity . The main base of the belt is de facto the dwarf planet Ceres , important industrial centers are asteroids such as Eros or free-flying space stations such as Tycho , while Jupiter's moon Ganymede is used for food production. A militant resistance group called the Outer Planets Alliance (OPA) has formed, which acts against Earth and Mars and is fought by the United Nations with all means. The escalation of the conflict between these three forces, which has been simmering for years, seems only a matter of time.

Cast and dubbing

The German dubbing was done at the dubbing company SDI Media Germany GmbH in Munich under the dialogue direction of Matthias Lange . He was assisted by Hans-Werner Schwarz and Dieter B. Gerlach in writing the dialogue book .

Reactions to the cancellation by SyFy and takeover by Amazon

Fans of the series collected 100,000 signatures in an online petition in one week to convince the streaming providers Amazon and Netflix to take over the series. On May 15, 2018, fans let a plane with a "Save-the-Expanse" banner circle over the Amazon headquarters in Los Angeles for several hours. Celebrities such as Wil Wheaton , George RR Martin , Patton Oswalt and the Danish astronaut Andreas Mogensen supported the campaign.

On May 25, 2018, the main owner of Amazon, Jeff Bezos , who is himself a big fan of the series, announced that the series would be completely taken over by Amazon from season 4. On December 12, 2019, the fourth season in a row was released on Amazon's Prime Video .
