Career highlights and awards

Markus Koch (born February 13, 1963 in Niedermarsberg ) is a former German professional American football player on the defensive line . He won two Super Bowls with the Washington Redskins .

Career

Koch played high school football in Kitchener , Ontario and college football with the Broncos at Boise State University in Idaho , where he was appointed to the selection team of the Big Sky Conference from 1983 to 1985 . He was also called three times to the All-American , 1983 by the Associated Press , and again by AP and Kodak in 1985, so that his professional chances were good.

In spring 1986 he was selected in the CFL Draft by the Toronto Argonauts and a little later in the second round of the NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins as the 30th player. Koch chose the Redskins. He also played as a linebacker, but mostly as a defensive end. With the Redskins he won Super Bowl XXII against the Denver Broncos in January 1988. In his career, he scored 10.5 sacks, but in October 1991 he suffered a knee injury against the Chicago Bears , which ultimately ended his playing career. For the subsequent victory of the Redskins in the Super Bowl, however, he was again awarded a "ring".

Because he achieved his success before the Internet age, Koch is mostly overlooked and Sebastian Vollmer is often referred to as the first German to be drafted and win the Super Bowl.

Life

When Koch was four years old, his family moved to Kitchener, Ontario in 1967. There he gained experience in the sports of soccer and ice hockey before he came to football.

After his football career ended, Koch moved to Port Townsend , Washington , where he temporarily worked as a carpenter. During this time, he was in physical and psychological pain, which he attributed to his football past. At the end of the 1990s he got to know alternative healing methods and has since worked as a naturopath with cranio-sacral therapy . Koch lives in Chelsea , Michigan .
