World government
As a world government is called the hypothetical unit of a governmental level - or a series of such planes - with nationwide legitimacy over the entire planet. Such a world government has not yet existed, even if great empires and world powers have pursued this claim. Examples from history failed not only because of inadequate communication and travel opportunities, because of different languages and morals , but also because of the practical difficulties in enforcing a unified organization or government around the world.
A distinction must be made between a democratically elected global government and a global government dominated by the current power constellations. The first option has been aimed at by the global citizens' movement since 1948 at the latest .
history
The idea of a government of the world was already discussed among the Greek and Hellenistic philosophers and cosmopolitans , among them Plato , Aristotle and Zeno von Kition . Modern philosophers such as Immanuel Kant ( For Eternal Peace ), Friedrich Nietzsche and Bertrand Russell have also written on the subject. Albert Einstein also campaigned for a world government. The idea of a world government was also discussed in Asian cultures. For example, at the beginning of the 20th century by the Chinese philosopher Kang Youwei , whose book Great Community from 1902 is said to have convinced American President Wilson of the need to found the League of Nations .
The world federalists are concerned with the goal of better organization of the world . The institutions they are striving for are called world government by some members.
National economy
According to economist Dani Rodrik's political trilemma of the world economy, there is a tension between hyperglobalization and political democracy. In order to take this tension into account, a world government is needed to set global rules in the context of hyperglobalization. Without them, the smooth functioning of global markets would not be possible in such a situation.
Others
The law faculty of the University of Chicago worked out the preliminary draft of a world constitution from 1945 to approx. 1949. Since 2008, the World Policy Conference has dealt annually with the drafting of the main features of a world government which, on the one hand, take account of the existence of independent states and, on the other hand, recognize the facts created by globalization.
conspiracy theories
Various conspiracy theories are circulating according to which either the participants of the Bilderberg Conference , the Group of Seven ("G7") , high finance , the Rothschilds or world Jewry would strive to abolish the sovereignty of the individual nation states in favor of a world government, or this goal already would have achieved.
World government in science fiction
World governments appear in several science fiction narratives, including Perry Rhodan , Isaac Asimov's Foundation cycle and the Star Trek universe.
In the poem The Last Chapter by Erich Kästner , a world government orders the murder of all people in order to "finally bring about peace".
