The atmosphere at the Ceres station in the asteroid belt is tense. The Belters are dissatisfied with the living conditions and feel exploited by both Earth and Mars . Joe Miller works there for the private security company Star Helix Security , where he also accepts bribes and is viewed by the belters as a traitor because he is one of them himself. Miller receives an unofficial assignment from his superior to find the young Juliette Andromeda Mao. She comes from a rich family on Earth and is said to be on Ceres. In the outer asteroid belt, the ice freighter Canterbury receives an emergency call from the ship Scopuli . Due to time pressure due to the urgently expected delivery of ice and fear of being caught by pirates, the captain orders the log entry to be deleted via the emergency number. Ship's officer James Holden secretly confirms the receipt out of a remorse, which is why the captain reluctantly orders a rescue operation, to which he is now legally obliged. Holden, who reluctantly acts as the Canterbury's first officer , goes with a team of five on the Canterbury's on-board shuttle , the Knight , and boards the apparently abandoned ship. The team finds that it has been linked to an unknown station that appears to have broadcast the distress call. Unexpectedly, a warship, previously undetected by the sensors, appears and uses guided missiles to destroy the Canterbury ; Holden and his team remain stranded on board their shuttle, badly damaged by wreckage from the Canterbury . Meanwhile, on Earth, Chrisjen Avasarala, Deputy Undersecretary of the United Nations (who only appears in the book series in the second novel), deals with the problem of the rebellious OPA ( Outer Planets Alliance ) and the tensions with Mars. Nor does she shy away from torture in order to obtain information after an OPA activist was arrested using elements of Martian stealth technology that he tried to smuggle.

Miller investigates water theft on Ceres: The expected delivery of ice from the freighter Canterbury has not materialized, and tensions are mounting on the station. Miller also finds evidence that Julie Mao left the station aboard the Scopuli ship . On the on-board shuttle Knight , the transmitter found on the Scopuli turns out to be a piece of military technology from Mars. The team concludes that the Mars fleet must have set the ambush. Oxygen on board the Knight is running out. The team manages to send an emergency signal using all its resources. When a ship reacts to this, joy breaks out. This dies, however, when it becomes clear that of all things the Mars fleet flagship MCRN Donnager has confirmed the distress signal. Because of the found transmitter, the crew members believe the Donnager to be the originator of the previous attack on Canterbury . Before the Knight is brought up and the team captured, Holden sends a general radio message summarizing his view of events, directly accusing the Martian forces of destroying the Canterbury . On Earth, Avasarala is reprimanded by her superior, Errinwright, for her methods of interrogating captured OPA members; she should carry out the further questioning on the moon if possible.

The radio message from Holden has been received on Ceres and is being distributed system-wide via the media, triggering in part violent protests against Mars. Miller discovers that unknown traces of Julie Mao are being purposefully removed. Miller's partner Havelock, who is being taught by a prostitute in the red-light district of the station in the language and gestures of the belters, is intercepted by OPA sympathizers and apparently left behind, along with a graffito with the words Remember the Cant (erbury) . Meanwhile , on the Martian flagship Donnager , the members of Holden's team are being interrogated separately by Martian Fleet Officer Lopez, and it is known, among other things, that Holden was dishonorably discharged from the UN space fleet for refusing to take action against Gürtler that Nagata had connections to Had extremists in the OPA and Alex Kamal served as a pilot in the Martian fleet for 20 years. The interrogation questions arouse doubts among all members as to whether they can still trust the others. On Earth, Avasarala suspects that Mars collaborated with the OPA and provided it with stealth technology, but this is doubted by the United Nations military command as there is no evidence. To prove her theory, she compromises an old acquaintance who serves as Earth's ambassador to Mars and has great sympathies for the Martians. However, when the Earth's secret service reports that the Martians have frantically checked their own holdings after the information was breached, it becomes clear that the Martians could not have delivered the materials found on the OPA activist, and thus the suspicion of a cooperation of the Mars cannot be hardened with the OPA.

On Ceres, Miller finds a dead contact, Julie Maos, who carried an encrypted data chip in his body, while Miller's partner Havelock is found seriously injured but not dead. On earth, speculations arise in the UN fleet command that one or more stealth ships are operating in the system, although it is not clear whether they belong to the Martian fleet. On the Donnager , Holden is taken to the bridge to see the ship's captain . She asks him to correct the radio message that was sent, as it was a lie. His distress call caused a lot of unrest in the solar system, as Mars is now being falsely blamed for the destruction of Canterbury . The Martians distrust Holden because he is a Terran. They have little left for the earth, where air and water are freely available, but are not valued and protected by anyone, while on the technologically highly developed Mars, the inhabitants have to live in domed cities. The Donnager is suddenly attacked by six smaller, unknown ships, which seem to be even more sophisticated in terms of military technology than the already very well-equipped Mars fleet, and which Holden recognizes as the real cause of the attack on the Canterbury . Although the Donnager destroyed four of the attackers in the fire fight with her railguns and automatic cannons , contrary to the commander's expectation, she was incapacitated by the remaining unknown enemies with railgun fire and boarded. The Canterbury team medic Shed Garvey, who is imprisoned with Naomi, Alex and Amos, is also killed during the shelling . Naomi and the others manage to barely seal their living room against the vacuum of space and hope to be saved. To save breathing air, Alex gives himself a sedative after Amos promised him to wear it if necessary. Holden is to be brought to Mars with an escort command led by Lieutenant Lopez to report on the attack, with Lopez also receiving a data chip with all telemetry data from the Donnager commander . Holden forces his companions to first save the rest of his team, with some members of the Martian fleet being killed, which creates tension between him and the Martians. After the rescue with the help of the meanwhile seriously wounded Lieutenant Lopez, the remaining Canterbury survivors barely reached the light MCRN frigate Tachi , which was docked in the hangar of the Donnager and with which they escaped, while the commander of the heavily damaged Donnager faced the storming of the bridge Self-destruct of the ship triggers to prevent its takeover by the unknown enemy. The remaining two stealth ships are apparently destroyed in the Donnager explosion .

On Ceres, Miller finds evidence that Julie Mao, who departed on the Scopuli ship, was in contact with the OPA and that she was involved in an apparently much larger matter. Miller is approached shortly thereafter by the OPA leader Dawes. He is ready to hand over the leader of the attackers on Havelock to Miller, if Miller provides his information about Julie Mao in return. Miller does not respond and is kidnapped by strangers. Holden and his team are floating in space with the MCRN Tachi , for which Lieutenant Lopez had given them full control at launch as he was not a pilot himself. Meanwhile Lopez has succumbed to his wounds. Nobody knows exactly how to proceed, because without Lopez as a witness, no member of the Martian fleet will believe their story. They are eventually contacted by Fred Johnson aboard the Tycho station , who offers them refuge and help reprogramming their transponder. Inevitably, the team agrees, renaming their ship Rocinante at Holden's suggestion . A flashback shows how the earth also uses force against Gürtler in order to protect its own interests. Years ago, workers aboard the Anderson station revolted over the poor conditions that particularly affected the children. However, despite the willingness of the revolters to unconditionally surrender, the protest was brutally suppressed by the UN military, and the Anderson station was destroyed. The then responsible UN commander was Colonel Fred Johnson.

On Ceres Miller was kidnapped by OPA supporters. Their leader Dawes beats up Miller because he desperately wants to get the information about Julie Mao, which Miller seems to be taken with. Miller confronts Dawes with his criminal vita: Dawes killed his own sister years ago. He does not deny it, but claims that the murder was the only way to save his family. Dawes has Miller thrown into an airlock to murder him. However, this is rescued by his colleague Octavia Muss and confronts his superiors with the encoded data he found. These point to a conspiracy at the highest level: According to this, unknown persons have developed a bio-weapon which the OPA tried in vain to get into their possession; now all traces of the powerful people in the background are removed. Miller's superior is apparently in the service of Dawes; she ensures that no copies of the data exist, takes the data repository, and fires Miller with immediate effect. At Tycho Station, Holden signs an agreement with Fred Johnson. Holden provides all information regarding the destruction of the Canterbury and the Donnager that Johnson wants to use as leverage, in return Johnson promises the team protection on the station. Holden is supposed to get a covert OPA agent with the code name Lionel Polanski out of the danger zone, because he knows more about the background. Holden's team members react differently to his admission that he recorded the Scopuli emergency call and thus forced the Canterbury to go to the rescue. In the end, however, Nagata, Kamal and Burton also take part in the mission. The Rocinante is repainted for use and camouflaged as a gas freighter in order not to immediately attract attention as a Martian warship. On Earth, Avasarala uses leverage to get information about Johnson at Tycho Station. She suspects that Johnson is connected to the events surrounding the unknown stealth ship, as it is building the largest spacecraft to date for the Mormons, the Nauvoo . She wants to activate a spy on Tycho. Her superior, Sadavir Errinwright, initially doubts Avasarala's objectivity, since she lost her son in a military operation against the OPA, but he finally approves the espionage operation. As in the previous episode, a scene is also shown that illustrates the ruthless behavior of the two great powers Earth and Mars towards the belters. The small mine ship Xinglong is brought in by the MCRN patrol ship Scipio Africanus , as it is located in a space zone that can only be accessed by the Gürtler with special permission. The two crew members named Mateo (uncle) and Diogo (nephew) are forced by the Martian boarding command because of an expired concession to take a considerable detour, for which the fuel reserves of the mine ship are not sufficient. Mateo then throws Diogo with a spacesuit into an airlock and releases him into space. Then he goes on a collision course with the Martian spaceship flying away, the machined comet in tow. Shortly before the impact, the Mars ship fires a rocket at the Xinglong and the nephew apparently sees both spaceships explode from a long way off.

The Ceres station is now actually controlled by the OPA. Miller is depressed after being released. But he continues to try to solve Julie Mao's disappearance. Finally he goes aboard a transporter to the Eros station , where the remaining tracks lead. On the Rocinante , which is also on its way to the Eros station, the crew discovers an Earth spy named Kenzo, who got on board from the Tycho station. He hides his real mission and pretends to be on board only for economic espionage interests. The ship's cover identity threatens to be exposed when a Martian border patrol notices the ship and announces an inspection. A conflict arises between Holden and Amos Burton because Amos simply wants to kill the Martians so they don't sound the alarm. After a tip from the spy, the accuracy of which is confirmed by Alex due to his Martian fleet past, the crew feverishly searches for the code book of the Martian ship and can provide the patrol with a correct security code in good time, with which one pretends to be a ship on a military secret operation, whereby the patrol the Rocinante lets pull uncontrollably. On Earth, Avasarala visits Holden's mother, who lives in Montana in the North American Trade Zone , to learn more about her son from her. Avasarala is seriously concerned that the cold war between Earth, Mars and the OPA will lead to open military conflict, but Holden's mother clearly distrusts her. Something like a mutual understanding only develops between the two women when it becomes clear that Holden is still alive and that Avasarala was also a mother and knows what it is like to lose a child.

On earth, Avasarala learns of the death of former ambassador DeGraaf, who is portrayed as a suicide. She is deeply shocked by this, especially since he had lost his ambassadorial post after being compromised by her and thus had no chance of retiring on Mars as planned. It is recognized that Holden and his people want Eros. Errinwright persuades Avasarala to take part in a secret operation on Eros to eliminate Holden and his team, as one can still not be sure that he has no terrorist intentions. The Rocinante has followed the bearing signal provided by Johnson and discovers a stealth ship, the Anubis, hidden in a registered asteroid . This was apparently responsible for the destruction of the Canterbury and probably also the Donnager , but is now abandoned. At first, the crew cannot find any trace of life on board. However, they do notice a strange crystal structure that has spread across parts of the ship. As you can see, the structure seems to feed on the energy of the on-board reactor, which was the reason for its shutdown. Holden decides to abandon the ship and torpedo it from the Roci . The on -board safe located on the bridge of the Anubis can be recovered by the team and taken with them on the Rocinante , with which one flies to the Eros station after the work is done. Meanwhile, Miller has arrived there and meets an old friend, Inspector Sematimba. Miller learns the whereabouts of Julie Mao. This turns out to be the person with the code name Lionel Polanski , who is also looking for Holden's crew. Miller and Holden's crew meet in the lobby of a hotel after Holden's people get into an exchange of fire with a United Nations Black Ops team that Kenzo was working with. Miller and Holden's crew finally discover only Julie Mao's corpse, which is covered with crystal spores.

Flashbacks show how the Scopuli was intercepted, Julie Mao became infected with the crystalline biostructure (called the protomolecule and apparently not of natural origin) on board the stealth ship Anubis , saw the protomolecule absorb the crew of the Anubis, managed to escape and eventually died on the Eros station. It turns out that Julie's father Jules Pierre Mao is instrumental in a conspiracy and that he is fueling the conflict between Earth and Mars. While mercenaries working for Mao quarantine the station, several people on board are infected with Julie's blood by a research team in order to serve as hosts of the new bioweapon. Holden and Miller try to find out about the researchers and make their way to the Rocinante separately from the rest of the crew . In doing so, they are suddenly exposed to a high dose of ionizing radiation. On Earth, Avasarala discovers hidden data about an experimental ship propulsion system in DeGraaf's office, but otherwise finds no evidence of the existence of the specimens already built according to the records. Meanwhile, Fred Johnson reveals to the solar system the knowledge gained by the Martian data chip, according to which the stealth ships were built on the Bush Naval Shipyards of the United Nations and thus influential people on earth seem to be involved in the conspiracy.

Naomi and the rest of the team reach the Rocinante after going astray through various supply tunnels , while Miller and Holden get caught in a shootout between the mercenaries hired by Mao to implement the quarantine and who fear for their survival and the security forces of the protomolecule researchers. Miller also recognizes the leader of the group that had seriously injured Havelock on Ceres and shoots him in cold blood. On board the Rocinante , Sematimba threatens Naomi with a weapon and demands that the ship cast off and Miller and Holden be left behind. Amos then shoots him from behind and the crew waits for Holden. The Rocinante later also reached this together with Miller, although both suffer significantly from the consequences of the high radiation exposure. The Rocinante can finally escape from the Eros station by giving up its camouflage as a gas freighter. They suspect that Julie Mao's father is significantly involved in the affair and wants to use the protomolecule for his own purposes, and they receive a bearing signal that they trace back to the researchers who examined the protomolecule at the Eros station. The spy Kenzo stays behind on the station and becomes a victim of the protomolecule, which apparently represents an intelligent form of life and seems to feed on the biomass of the infected. On Earth, Avasarala must realize that her direct superior Errinwright is involved in the Mao conspiracy and wants to blame the OPA for the affair and the construction of the stealth ships. Avasarala concludes that her old friend DeGraaf did not commit suicide, but learned too much about the new ships and was therefore murdered.

On Mars, Marine Sergeant Bobbie Draper and her team completed an exercise and then went with the Martian battleship Scirocco to Phoebe Station, from which the danger seems to have originated and which was also checked by the Donnager . But the UN combat ship Nathan Hale is also on its way there at the behest of Undersecretary Errinwright. The crew of the Rocinante discovers video footage from the protomolecule researchers, which shows that the eruption of the deadly protomolecule was apparently a planned experiment and that the molecule appears to be of extraterrestrial origin. Amos also opens the safe recovered from the Anubis , which turns out to be a cryogenic transport capsule for samples of the protomolecule. The crew loads them into a remotely steerable rocket and hides them in an asteroid field so that they can be picked up again later. Holden and Miller suffer from radiation poisoning after the events on Eros and require treatment. Holden also has an affair with Nagata. On earth, people at the UN headquarters watch with concern as the Martian ship Scirocco approaches the Phoebe station. Both sides distrust each other so much that the Mars fleet ship finally destroyed the abandoned research base, which actually counts as a neutral reason, with torpedoes, since otherwise the UN ship would have reached them first. Avasarala, meanwhile, takes precautions in the event that her superior Errinwright takes action against her, as she at least suspects his involvement in the previous events. She hires an old friend, Cotyar Ghazi, as her personal bodyguard. He is supposed to benefit her with his secret service experience, and he owes her something because he was responsible for the death of her son. It is shown that Errinwright is actually working with Jules Pierre Mao and is apparently well informed about the experiments with the protomolecule.

The Rocinante's crew meets with Fred Johnson to discuss the events of Eros. Johnson is dissatisfied with the unsuccessful rescue, points to the tensions in the solar system and that certain circles seem to want to provoke a war. However, he is interested in the knowledge about the protomolecule. Therefore, Holden's crew and Miller, along with some of the people who Johnson rounded up, take part in a mission to an allegedly abandoned space station to which Eros signals are sent and which appears to be important for protomolecular research. A stealth ship stationed there can be shot by Alex Kamal after a trick with the Rocinante incapable of combat and maneuvering, although the attack in corresponding simulations before the deployment had always led to the destruction of the Rocinante due to the superior armament of the stealth ship . However, one of the two enterer capsules with 25 fighters on board is lost in the attack, for which Alex blames himself. The team captures the scientist Dresden, who was responsible for the experiment on Eros, and learn from him more about the protomolecule, which is apparently of extraterrestrial origin and which came into the solar system with the asteroid Phoebe , where it was captured by the gravitational pull of Saturn is; it was supposed to serve as a bio-weapon. The eruption on Eros that was brought about was intended to test whether the protomolecule can be controlled and so humanity can be prepared for an imminent attack. Dresden offers to work for the OPA with immediate effect, which Johnson wants to accept under certain conditions, but Miller shoots Dresden because of the murderous experiment on Eros. Due to the destruction of the Phoebe station by the Martian fleet ship Scirocco, some people at UN headquarters (including Admiral Nguyen and Undersecretary Errinwright) are calling for retaliatory strikes against the Martians. When the UN Commander in Chief Admiral Souther refuses to support such an escalation, he is forced to resign by Errinwright. Avasarala meets with Souther, who makes it clear to her that he considers her unscrupulous and manipulative. Nevertheless, she learns from him that Johnson is not the murderous butcher he was portrayed as after the events at Anderson Station , as he ordered the attack in ignorance of the surrender of the station residents. She decides to contact Johnson, although Cotyar advises her that it would be treason.

In retaliation for the destruction of the Phoebe station, the UN military uses guided weapons to destroy the Martian moon Deimos . Tensions between Earth and Mars are increasing. Avasarala is very concerned about the escalation, while Errinwright calmly points out that the UN fleet, while not as modern combat ships as the MCRN, is vastly outnumbered. The Rocinante's crew repairs the damage from the previous battle for the research station. Fred Johnson asks Miller to disappear from the Tycho station after his action (the murder of Dresden). That is why there is an argument between Holden and Nagata. Johnson points out to Holden the activities of the Protogen group, which is apparently involved in research into the protomolecule; Holden then interrogates Cortázar, the detained researcher from the station. They only gain his trust and cooperation when they no longer declare that they want to destroy the protomolecule. Parts of Cortázar's brain were manipulated with a magnet so that he is no longer able to feel empathy and compassion. Amos compares Cortázar's approach to the protomolecule with the obsession of a pedophile. Avasarala manages to use Cotyar's contacts to send a secret message to Johnson, in which she asks him for help in preventing the impending war. Johnson and Miller have another conversation; they seem to agree that all occurrences of the protomolecule must be destroyed.

Avasarala has Cotyar fake the accidental discovery of the stealth ship previously destroyed by the Rocinante , whose coordinates she had received from Fred Johnson. This discovery caused a sensation in the system-wide media, and the quick inference about the Protogen group made a connection between Jules-Pierre Mao and the dubious activities of the stealth ships publicly suggested. In a conversation between Avasarala and Errinwright and Mao, the latter claims that he has no knowledge of Protogen's activities, that the company represents only a fraction of the financial volume of his group, but that he will of course cooperate in clearing up any misconduct. Avasarala pressures Mao with seemingly harmless questions and makes it clear between the lines that she does not believe his excuses. In a subsequent secret conversation between Mao and Errinwright, Mao declares that he is looking for other allies, since Errinwright only cares about his career, does not understand the great evolutionary opportunity that the protomolecule offers, and since Mao does not seem to notice, that Avasarala sees through the game of the two. Meanwhile, a team is put together on Tycho to intercept Eros and cause a collision with the misappropriated Nauvoo, which should cause Eros to fall into the sun. Arriving at Eros, the Rocinante drops bombs, which an outside team of volunteers from the Tycho freighter Guy Molinari is supposed to transport to the right place in order to seal the surface completely as a precaution. Miller, who came up with the idea for this mission, is part of the away team. During the mission, the Rocinante discovers a ship docked on the station surface, the Marasmus . The crew of the ship, which apparently consists of doctors and other volunteers and wanted to help the supposedly sick people of Eros, considers the Roci to be an active ship in the Martian fleet and initially declares that they want to leave; one had not gained access to the station anyway. However, when Miller discovers an open airlock on the outside of Eros, behind which lies a dead Marasmus crew member covered in protomolecule crystals , Holden disrupts communications with the Marasmus and orders the other ship to prepare for an inspection to make sure no one is there got infected. In doing so, he finally reveals himself. Thereupon the commander of the other ship explains that they now know that the use of a weapon on Eros should be covered up. But that should not be successful, everyone should experience it - he, Holden, should really understand it. After the communication breakdown , the Marasmus tries to maneuver itself to the other side of Eros in order to avoid the interference signal. The crew realizes that a transmitted radio signal - as it was back then with the Canterbury - can cause a lot of damage if it conveys the wrong message. Holden hesitates for a long time, but just before the marasmus enters the blind spot of the jammer , he fires a torpedo that destroys the other ship. He is extremely annoyed that he was forced to make this tough decision because he is obviously still reluctant to kill people. Miller's bomb is meanwhile damaged by flying debris from the Marasmus : The bomb's 5-minute detonation timer starts running as soon as you let go of the bomb's control panel and is only reset to 5 minutes by touching it again. Therefore Miller stays on Eros and sends Diogo, who had accompanied him, back to the Guy Molinari . When the Nauvoo arrives, Eros suddenly moves out of its orbit on its own, preventing the collision.

Eros is on a collision course with the earth, pursued by the Rocinante . Miller tries to bring his bomb to the center of the asteroid and is not bothered on his way there by the protomolecule structures found. He notices that the protomolecule apparently ignores people who have already died, as some of the corpses found show no signs of infection. The UN is trying to destroy Eros with around 120 nuclear missiles used for planetary defense, and warn Mars to be on the safe side that the launch will not be a nuclear first strike. As the missiles approach Eros, the asteroid suddenly disappears from the radar, rendering the nuclear missiles useless. This imitation of stealth properties by the asteroid is completely inexplicable. The crew of the Eros following Rocinante then provided a laser target marker for the rockets, whereby a control of the rockets from earth would be associated with too high latency times to be useful. When Fred Johnson offers to help, the UN reluctantly transfers flight control of the missiles to Tycho Station. Suddenly Eros accelerates so strongly that the Rocinante can no longer keep up without endangering the life of the crew. Miller discovers inside the asteroid - in the hotel where he first met Holden's crew and where he found Julies Mao's body - Julie, transformed by the protomolecules, who is conscious again. The crew suspects that it may have become a so-called seed crystal that Cortázar had spoken of. She tells Miller about her dream of returning home with her racing spaceship Razorback , which seems to have been the reason for Eros' transformation into a spaceship. In the course of the attack on Eros, the crew of the Rocinante discovered that of the 120 misdirected UN nuclear missiles only about 90 were destroyed by the self-destruct codes still controlled by the UN; apparently the remaining 30 of these missiles were brought under control by Fred Johnson. He plans to use the rockets for the belt as a bargaining chip in order to be accepted as equal partners in upcoming negotiations with Earth and Mars. After the events of Eros and Venus, the crew of the Rocinante decides to destroy the protomolecule sample previously hidden in a torpedo as too dangerous, but Nagata betrays her friends by merely simulating the flight of the torpedo into the sun, which no one does is noticed. Bobbie Draper and her team of marines are supposed to protect farms on Ganymede, which they are not enthusiastic about - but her supervisor, Lieutenant Sutton, explains that her duty requires that she carry out every assignment with fervor and conviction. When Draper and her squad are on patrol, they notice a seemingly lost agricultural drone above them. Then they see firing UN soldiers running towards them and the radio is interrupted. Bobbie finally lets fire open. Both the UN forces and the Mars units in orbit see the events as an enemy attack. In the following orbital battle, a mirror satellite is destroyed and crashes on the farm colony. Sutton on the Scirocco is killed when a UN ship is shot at. The Martian forces "win" the argument. Avasarala calls for a peace summit between Earth and Mars to prevent further escalation, as both parties assume the other would have shot first. Mars accepts this offer. Draper has been rescued by the Mars military and is questioned, but her superiors don't seem to believe her. She is supposed to travel to earth and, at the peace summit, untruthfully testify that the Martian forces fired first. In the interviews it becomes clear that a detail she observed - the seventh man who was not wearing a spacesuit and from whom the UN Marines apparently fled - should not be discussed. The Captain Martens, who was put aside for Bobbie, does not seem to be a military chaplain as initially claimed, but rather to be engaged in a secret service activity, as the interrogations are partly carried out under his supervision. On board a refugee ship, the botanist Praxidike Meng mourns his daughter Mei, who is believed to have died in the Ganymede incident. He is horrified when the ship's crew sends people through the airlock to their death, just because they come from Earth or Mars - a friend of his is also killed this way. When he arrives at Tycho Station, however, he cannot even name the ship or the responsible crew members, which is why this crime goes unpunished. Johnson and the crew of the Roci find that the launch of Dawes' own ship was a feint and that Dawes and Cortázar left the station with another ship in the opposite direction shortly after the launch of the Roci . Holden suspects that he couldn't have done this without help from some of the station staff. The Tycho station, which is now teeming with refugees from Ganymede, receives a message from Dawes, who accuses Johnson, with reference to his origin as a Terran, of ultimately wanting to patronize the Gürtler by hiding the protomolecule. On the way to Ganymede, the crew of the Rocinante in Mars uniforms boarded the auxiliary freighter Weeping Somnambulist to use it as camouflage for the landing on Ganymede, where Mars hardly allows any foreign ships to fly, and the Roci as a Martian combat ship is immediately recognized and enraged would be. The crew's deception is quickly revealed when Holden is recognized by the ship's captain. Reluctantly, he and his wife join in the game. Draper is skeptical and believes Avasarala's information is a deception because she still sees the UN as an enemy. But Avasarala makes it clear that the threat to the whole system is far too serious to still see each other as enemies. Cotyar Ghazi provides timely warning to ensure that they are not seen together before the Martians catch up with Draper and bring him back to the embassy. On Ganymede, Burton forces a corrupt information dealer to find surveillance footage of Strickland for no consideration, showing that he was escaping with Mei in the oldest part of the station. On the way to the access seen in the videos, Meng watches the plant production and the life support of the station and realizes that the damage caused by the fighting to the complex artificial system of Ganymede could be irreparable. The Mars fleet meanwhile declares a no-fly zone around Ganymede, which means that Holden's team can no longer leave the station the same way it came.

Avasarala flies to Mao's ship with Bobbie Draper and Cotyar Ghazi. This gives both Earth and Mars access to the protomolecule technology developed at Ganymede in order to maintain the balance of forces. Errinwright writes a suicide note and briefly considers committing suicide with a poison capsule, but then decides to use Avasarala's absence to take action again and perhaps save his existence. He invites the Mars Defense Minister Korshunov to come under a pretext and poisons him with a forbidden toxin encoded on Korshunov's DNA, as this is the only comparable high-ranking confidante in Mao's protomolecule activities and Mars is to be pushed out of business. Errinwright then orders the killing of the Martian ship Karakum , which was supposed to bring the protomolecule being from Ganymede after Mars wanted to acquire the technology from Mao, and finally contacts Mao on his ship. He explains to the assembled discussion group that he is responsible for Korshunov's death and the destruction of the Karakum , makes clear his intention to return to working with Mao, emphasizes his conviction that this is for the good of the earth, and calls on Mao to go to Avasarala kill. Naomi Nagata, who has been plagued by a guilty conscience since fleeing Eros because she saved too few lives, has since gone to the weeping somnambulist with Burton , while Holden and Meng were picked up from the laboratory by Alex. She repairs the ship to do better this time and to save as many people as possible. Although the ship has space for over 300 people, after the air refueling station has closed, it only has air supplies for 52 people. The protomolecule being is discovered in the Rocinante's hold . While trying to kill it, Holden is trapped by a shipping container and cannot fight the creature any further, but the creature lets go of it and begins to work its way to the ship's reactor. The rest of the team is preparing an explosive decompression of adjacent ship sections through the cargo hold to eliminate the creature, which would also kill Holden, which is why Naomi is vehemently against it. Meng suspects that the creature needs the radiation from the reactor for food and suggests using the nuclear warhead of a torpedo as bait. The plan works. Meng and Naomi lure the creature out of the ship after the engine has been switched off and it is completely burned by re-igniting the main engines. Errinwright then learns from an unknown informant that the situation with Mao's ship has not yet been resolved. The crew of the Rocinante repairs the damage and overlooks a small protomolecule trace inside the ship. After the declaration of war was circulated in the media, it became clear to everyone on board that their ship could become a problem because they are known almost everywhere, the Martian fleet might want to recapture the ship at the earliest opportunity and the UNN would shoot them down without being asked. Naomi renames the ship the Pinus Contorta at Meng's suggestion . (In the further course it is still referred to as Rocinante by the crew .) It becomes clear that the relationship between Naomi and the rest of the crew is very tense after her confession regarding the protomolecule sample. She vehemently suggests that the ship should go to Tycho, since that is the best place to go underground and because Johnson owes them something from the protomolecule sample. While the civilians of the earth are more and more afraid of the war with Mars and vehement protests are taking place in front of the UN headquarters, Esteban Sorrento-Gillis calls an old friend, the Methodist pastor and former nurse Annushka "Anna" Volovodov, over to help him write a speech for the assembly in which he has to justify the war - he sees it as the most important speech of his life. Anna, who had previously helped him on such occasions, reluctantly accepts the offer, but commits Esteban to have the UN sponsored a charitable hospital in St. Petersburg for a year, which she runs. At a joint meeting, she angered Errinwright by calling for restraint and pointing out that collective punishment, such as that against Mao's family in wartime, was a war crime. Jules-Pierre Mao visits Dr. Strickland on Io and is considering ending the entire project, whereupon Strickland reveals to him that the children of Ganymede, including Mei, can be controllable hosts for the protomolecule because of the particular genetic defect. Mei has meanwhile arrived at the laboratory, receives further treatment and meets the boy named Katoa, known to her from Ganymede, who shows her “something cool”: bluish shimmering structures inside his forearm; apparently he has already advanced in the treatment of protomolecules. The Razorback is being pursued by the UNN ship. Although the racing spaceship can fly fast enough to escape the UNN ship, and Bobbie is not affected by the prevailing g-forces because of her training, it becomes clear that Avasarala's body cannot handle the acceleration force required to escape, which is why Bobbie has to fly more slowly and the Razorback threatens to come within range of the UNN torpedoes. On Earth, Errinwright is pushing for a preemptive strike against Mars’s first-strike nuclear weapons. The five camouflaged orbital launchers of the Martian forces are currently being temporarily detected by spy satellites, but by constantly changing position they would soon become invisible again, so that the opportunity for an attack would not be more favorable - the probability of success for a complete destruction of these bases would be included with the detection of all five launchers 82 percent. Admiral Souther has one of his officers fake a technical malfunction on the deck of the infirmary in order to speak to Cotyar undisturbed. He tells him the true story about Errinwright, for which Souther demands evidence, which Cotyar cannot provide. Souther manages to leave the infirmary before someone sees the two of them together. Nevertheless, Admiral Nguyen has become suspicious and takes command of the Agatha King . He lets the ship pull out of the fleet and orders it to go to Io. In the protomolecular research laboratory on Io, Mao begins to befriend Mei. He is reminded of his own daughters by her and orders Strickland to stop the project when the currently infected child appears to begin to die. Avasarala has now largely recovered and tells the Roci crew the story of Mao and Bobbie's role on Ganymede. Holden refuses to send Avasarala's message to anyone because a directional beam signal would reveal the Rocinante's position . He explains that they are only flying to Io because of Prax's daughter and that he does not want to be involved in the war. Alex, who had previously sent a sign of life to his family for the first time in a long time, receives a reply from his wife on Mars, who explains that he has been too long with it and that she and his son no longer need him which is quite a blow to him. Avasarala learns that Naomi gave Fred Johnson the protomolecule samples, which causes her utter horror. Naomi affirms that the Belt deserves this weapon if everyone else has it, and vows never to give Avasarala access to it.

Esteban Sorrento-Gillis gives the speech written by Anna before the General Assembly, but it has apparently been revised by Errinwright to portray Mars as the main culprit in the escalation and to further justify the need to destroy it before dealing with Venus. Anna is horrified and disgusted by Errinwright's unscrupulous behavior and the apparent thoughtlessness with which Esteban speaks so devastatingly at people, and she prepares to leave. The Roci is running out of fuel and ammunition . When they reach the rubble field of a previous space battle between UNN and MCRN, Holden sees the chance to replenish supplies, what Alex and Bobbie initially call corpse-busting. Ultimately, however, both recognize the pragmatic approach and bow to the majority. The crew board the heavily damaged Mars ship Kittur Chennamma , which is floating in space, in search of supplies. Its command deck was apparently destroyed so quickly that not even the automatic cannons could be used. They also find three surviving young officers of the Mars fleet in a sealed room. Avasarala appeals to Holden's ideals and persuades him to relay the taping of Errinwright's betrayal to Anna, which she previously recognized on a telecast of Esteban's speech. She thinks this is the best way for the news to get through to Esteban, since Anna is not under Errinwright's influence. The three MCRN officers are cared for in the Roci's infirmary and recognize her as a former ship on board the Donnager . They assume the crew stole it and it belongs back in the Martian fleet to help in the war. They think Alex is a traitor, even though he has served honorably, overwhelm him and take him and Naomi hostage to fly the Roci to Callisto , where the fleets of Mars and Earth will seek the decisive battle . Holden overpowers one of the three, armed himself and stalemated on the bridge before Bobbie can talk the young officers out of their plan. It also becomes clear that the officers have the greatest respect for the abilities of a Martian marine, even if he is not wearing armor. Holden then has the other Martian ship repaired so that the Martians can rejoin their fleet, and gives them a copy of the Errinwright recording, which they should forward to Admiral Souther on the Agatha King via their captain . The spokesman for the Mars officers is a bit overwhelmed with the task because he does not understand the context and it seems a bit surreal to him to be supposed to work with the number three in the hierarchy of the UN, the well-known James Holden and a deserted Mars marine, promises in the end but to get the message across. Dr. After the experiment was discontinued, Strickland secretly continued working with Mei's infected friend Katoa. Mao is initially angry when he happens to find out about this from Mei. The MCRN officers arrive in their fleet and pass the Errinwright recording on to the commander of the Mars ship MCRN Hammurabi . This and her first officer are not initially convinced of the authenticity, especially since Mars and Earth are now in fact at war - they consider it a secret service deception and know that it could be seen as high treason to assign a commander of the enemy in war to contact. However, it is noted that the Agatha King does not fly to Callisto, but to Io, although her firepower would certainly be used by the fleet. Then the Hammurabi also takes a course there. Avasarala admits on the Roci that the earth still needs a sample of protomolecules. She wants to unite humanity, which is why she needs Holden's help to end the war against Mars that was started by Errinwright. Alex receives another message from Mars. At first he hesitates, but then looks at each other. His son contacts him and tells him that he doesn't see things like his mother does. He's proud of his father and says he looks forward to doing things with Alex and saving Mars when he's old enough. This message moves him deeply. Souther and parts of his crew mutiny against Nguyen and announce to the UN fleet and the Mars fleet by radio that Nguyen has been arrested for conspiracy and that they want to withdraw. On the bridge of the Agatha King there is a scuffle with an exchange of fire between Southers and Nguyen's followers, and some of the mutineers are killed, including Souther himself. The rest is taken away. Several UNN ships are simultaneously obeying Southers orders and leaving the fleet, including the escort ship UNN Jimenez . Nguyen shoots the ship down with a torpedo himself when it fails to comply with his order to return to the fleet. As a result, there is a space war between loyal and renegade ships of the UN. In the laboratory, Mao learns from Katoa, who continues to mutate, that work on the “work” of the protomolecule on Venus is almost complete. Katoa does not reveal what this “work” consists of and then loses his ability to speak due to the progressive transformation. Mao wants more knowledge and orders Strickland to infect the next subject, Mei. Before that can happen, however, it is noticed that a ship appears to be landing at the base. This is the Roci that has approached the base in the radar shadow of Io so as not to be drawn into the conflict of the fleets. Therefore, hasty preparations are being made to leave the base. On the Hammurabi , the fighting between the UN fleet is observed with some irritation, and the XO wants to take the opportunity to attack all UNN ships. But the commander explains that it would be smarter to wait - than to intervene than the Martian fleet would only reunite the two conflicting parties within the UN against the common enemy. In a radio message to the UN fleet, she explains that any UNN ship that refrains from combat operations will be considered to be flying a white flag, and that the Mars fleet will provide assistance to any such ship if requested. Mao and Dr. Strickland overlooks surveillance video and believes that Holden's crew who break into the station are a squad of Mars Marines. They are preparing to evacuate the children and, if necessary, to take them hostage. Mao orders that all data cores are also backed up and brought onto his shuttle. Meanwhile, numerous probes with protomolecule hybrids are fired at Nguyen's orders, and since their transponders are turned off and made of stealth materials, they are no longer trackable after leaving the atmosphere. Both Alex with the Roci's cannons and the ships in orbit can destroy some of the probes, but one hits and infects the Agatha King . Avasarala is certain that the probes will head for Mars, as this was Errinwright's goal from the start. The fully hybridized Katoa is released by Strickland and threatens to attack the team. Bobbie lures him to the surface to buy Holden's crew time. Holden kills Mao's bodyguard and takes Mao prisoner. Amos and Prax find Strickland and the children in the air lock to the rescue shuttle. Strickland pretends to be a benevolent savior, but neither of the two believes him. Prax wants to shoot Strickland, but Amos dissuades him because Prax is not a killer. Strickland is only briefly relieved before Amos shoots him. The infection spreads on the Agatha King , and infected people indiscriminately attack other crew members. Rescued by a newly infected ship's officer, Cotyar puts on a spacesuit to try to find a way off the ship. In the base on Io, the crew does not find any way to stop the hybrid probes; however, it becomes clear that the start codes were sent to the Agatha King . Then Alex and Naomi fly with the Razorback to the UNN ship. Meanwhile, Bobbie fights himself fiercely on the surface of the Io research base with the hybrid, which can heal even the most serious gunshot wounds quickly. After both of them fell from a building on the base from a certain height, the creature seems to be able to cope with the consequences of the fall more quickly, sits on Bobbie and seems to want to examine them. Although Bobbie's combat suit is badly damaged by the fall, she manages to injure the hybrid so badly in the head with her automatic cannon that he dies. Alex and Naomi arrive at the UNN ship and are horrified at the sight. The protomolecule now also seems to grow on the ship's hull itself. They dock at a maintenance lock in the area not affected by the infection and enter the ship's command center, where Nguyen, who is now dressed in a spacesuit, awaits them and gives them tirades of hate because of their Martian spacesuits. Naomi and Alex hear this message and leave the ship in time after Naomi has at least activated the transponders of all hybrid probes. Since the probes are now visible again thanks to the activated transponder, Naomi has an idea: She contacts Johnson on Tycho and suggests destroying the hybrid probes with the remaining 30 nuclear missiles from the Eros incident. This would save Mars from certain doom and give the Belt a good starting position for the negotiations expected in the near future. Johnson follows the suggestion, apparently this will destroy all hybrid probes. While on Earth, Anna has now shown Esteban Sorrento-Gillis the video she had received from Avasarala. Esteban then quotes Errinwright and confronts him with the video, whose authenticity Errinwright does not deny. Errinwright then makes it clear how much he despises the Secretary General as a turning neck and puppet who, like a parrot, always parrot what would have been whispered in her ear. He himself deserves this office more than Esteban because he is ready to do what is necessary and he does not regret any of his deeds. Esteban then orders Errinwright's arrest for high treason; the plot has finally failed. Mao is taken to Avasarala as a prisoner, Bobbie befriends Alex, Prax spends time with Mei, and Holden makes up with Naomi. Finally, you can see how a gigantic squid-like protomolecular structure lifts off the surface of Venus; It is still unclear what purpose it serves.

UN Secretary General Sorrento-Gillis has resigned after the Mao and Errinwright conspiracy was uncovered. Chrisjen Avasarala has succeeded him. What became of the conspirators is not known. The OPA is now recognized as the representative government of the Belt and is jointly led by Anderson Dawes and Fred Johnson, but both apparently still have not merged their protomolecule resources (Cortázar and the sample). The protomolecular structure started by Venus has moved into an unstable orbit on the other side of Uranus and has been transformed into a ring-shaped structure, which the media and all those involved only call "the ring". Earth, Mars and OPA send out fleets to investigate the ring. Anna flies to the ring with the UN fleet. Bobbie, who was accepted back into the Mars Marine Corps after her rehabilitation, is also on the way there with the Mars fleet and is still in contact with Alex. The Gürtler Maneo is on the road as a Slingshot racing driver with his boat in the area of ​​the Saturn, he apparently already holds some records, but is under pressure because his girlfriend makes it clear that he has been gone too long for her taste and is apparently with his Brother lets in. She is the chief engineer of Camina Drummer's OPA flagship Behemoth , the former Nauvoo . Dawes sends former pirate Klaes Ashford to the ship to act as Drummer's chief officer. With him comes Diogo Harari, who is now a lieutenant in the OPA Navy, but whom those involved have not yet forgiven for his role in the kidnapping of Cortázar. When a technician from Behemoth , whom Naomi had previously caught buying drugs with his dealer, had a fatal accident while working with a maintenance spaceship because of drug consumption, Drummer decides to make an example and wants to publicly choose the person responsible for the drug black market on board thrown the airlock. Ashford steps in, persuades the drummer to spare the man, and declares that one is now a real state and should no longer behave like a pack of uncivilized animals, because that would be one of the best arguments for the "inner", the belt as inferior to see. Ashford drummer also interrupts an announcement in front of the assembled crew to make it clear that criminals will be locked up and tried instead of simply thrown into space. Even if Naomi thinks Ashford is right about this, the impression is given that Ashford is at least approving of the fact that Drummer's authority is being undermined. A civilian technician crew is sent to the UN escort ship Seung Un for repair work . The electrical engineer Melba Koh, who apparently only recently joined the team, lays a bomb on the ship and kills her foreman when he accidentally discovers her sabotage. The resulting negative g-forces due to the huge difference in speed (ΔV or "Delta-V") kill Maneo instantly before the ship slowly disappears into the ring. Holden is alone in his quarters on the Rocinante and suddenly sees Miller sitting on his bed, telling him some apparently incoherent things.

Melba hides the body of her foreman and flies with her colleagues to the UN ship Thomas Prince . She seems to regret the killing of her colleague and also forbids the others on the team to speak badly of him when they suspect he had drunk too much and was sleeping off his intoxication somewhere on Seung Un . On the Thomas Prince she briefly meets Anna, but avoids a conversation. The death of the Slingshot pilot, who filmed his flight (and thus also his demise) himself, is shown live on all channels and has caused mixed reactions in the UN fleet. It is speculated that the OPA was sending human guinea pigs into the ring, but it is recognized that the pilot was simply a daredevil trying to impress his girlfriend. But it is still not really clear to anyone what could have been triggered by this action, or whether - and how - the ring could "react". On the Rocinante , Holden scanned himself several times for protomolecule infections and other health problems after the appearance of Miller, but found no irregularities. He notes that Miller only appears to him when he is alone, and apparently only gives irrelevant stuff from his investigative work on Ceres, whereby he also repeatedly and hardly answers questions. Amos and Alex, unable to see Miller, notice that Holden appears to be talking to himself and are alarmed. Holden comes up with an idea in a conversation with Monica: He compares the timestamps from her film material and the news stream to see that the Miller apparition first appeared at the exact moment the slingshot pilot entered the ring. He realizes that the ring, or at least Miller, has been "activated" in this way. Cohen, the cameraman, exchanges a circuit on the Rocinante in an unobserved moment ; he seems to know what he is doing and stows the removed circuit in his equipment. Miller explains to Holden in another apparition that he is "an investigator" who is sent from the ring to look for things if necessary. He realizes that he and Holden are both just tools for a greater purpose. Melba uses her mobile device to destroy the Seung Un from on board the Thomas Prince and then plays a fake video message in which Holden takes responsibility for the bomb attack and declares the ring to be the OPA's possession. Presumably thanks to Cohen's sabotage, it appears that the Rocinante would be sending this video message when in fact it is being sent from Melba's mobile device. As a result of the sabotage, the Rocinante is no longer able to communicate with the outside world and no longer has access to its weapon systems. UN ships target the Roci after the video message has been transmitted . On the Behemoth , Ashford demands that they also shoot the Rocinante as soon as possible to prove that Holden did not speak for the OPA. Despite Naomi's desperate protests, Drummer finally gives the order. The Behemoth's power grid fails at first, but eventually a torpedo can be fired. Alex does his best to save the ship from the approaching missile, but knows that the torpedo will catch up with them and destroy them if they can't get any of their weapon systems under control. Holden can get Amos to give him a minute alone in the airlock. The protomolecule Miller appears to him and says that “you shouldn't get into a room too quickly, otherwise he'll eat you up”. Holden concludes that the Roci should slowly fly through the ring. He can convince Alex to trust him, slow down, and head for the ring. Holden wakes up after a blackout to find that time seems to have almost completely stopped around the ship. The missile was right behind the Roci when it entered the ring and now appears to be stationary. One camera shot shows the trace of the protomolecule on board the Rocinante , which was previously overlooked during the cleaning after the elimination of the hybrid , but which has not visibly changed or expanded. The impression arises that there must be a connection between Miller's appearance, of all places , on the Rocinante and this remaining track.

The crew advises their situation. The ship is located within a kind of huge space “bubble” to which the ring forms an access. The missile was almost completely stopped and diverted just behind the ship so that it will not hit the Rocinante , but rather fly towards a spherical structure that lies in the center of the bubble. However, the Rocinante can still neither communicate nor use their weapons. The MRCN ship Xuesen follows them into the bladder and sends off two probes: one leaves the bladder again through the ring, the other collides with the bladder wall, apparently on purpose, and is dissolved. The options are therefore quickly clear to everyone: to be seized by the MCRN or to be destroyed because you can no longer shoot your way to the exit. The returned Mars fleet probe serves as a communication relay as it does not seem possible to transmit through the event horizon of the ring. The Mars fleet ship declares that it wants to raise the Rocinante and recommends that all other parties involved stay behind for their own safety. This is taken on board the Behemoth as a sign that the Roci has not been destroyed as Naomi feared. In view of the fact that sabotage must have been carried out, Amos draws his conclusions and puts Cohen under massive pressure, which he had previously encountered alone in sensitive areas of the ship. Cohen admits to Monica's horror that he sabotaged the Roci , but says he was only supposed to get information and never met his client in person. Even when Amos threatens to kill Monica, Cohen cannot say what specifically he did. Alex notices , however, that the intervention in the systems was severe and that the Roci has to go to the dock. Since Naomi is not on board, there is also a lack of in-depth technical expertise to eliminate the error, so that other solutions are feverishly searched for. Amos eventually sends Cohen and Monica out of the ship in spacesuits so they can be picked up by the chasing MCRN ship and prove Holden's innocence by making the complex sabotage public. Holden is also thinking aloud about surrendering to the Martian fleet, but no one approves, since the Roci would then be gone - although that would still be better than colliding with the edge of the bubble and dying. On the Behemoth , Ashford seeks a conversation with Naomi after the situation has since escalated. She realizes that her return to OPA must have been an expression of nostalgia, and that her heart is still with the Rocinante . Drummer meanwhile gives an inspiring speech from the command center before the Behemoth also flies through the ring into the bladder, and finally gives Naomi a maintenance shuttle so that she can fly back to her old crew. In retrospect it is shown that Melba, alias Clarissa, is Julie Mao's older sister, who, unlike Julie, was never able to get her father's favor because he always preferred Julie. Still, Clarissa seems obsessed with destroying Holden in order to avenge her father, whose visionary insights into the protomolecule he was wrongly never thanked for. The UN fleet meanwhile has the civilians evacuated from their ships due to the change in the threat situation, but Anna can stay after she persuades her friend, Tilly, who is also on board, to let her relations with an old UN officer play out. Clarissa also stays, ostensibly because of the increased danger pay, and starts talking to Anna. Miller, who has been much more consistent, talkative and understandable since the Roci entered the bladder (“The signal is better here”), recommends Holden to examine the center of the bladder. Holden leaves the ship in a spacesuit and floats towards the spherical structure in the middle.

On the way to the sphere, Holden continues to talk to the imaginary Miller, who tells him that his task is important because only he, Holden, go into the "archive" as a real person and uncover the crucial clue to the solution of the "case" could. When they arrive at the sphere, a tunnel-like access opening opens for Holden, into which, after initial skepticism, he finally floats. MCRN Xuesen previously sent a landing craft carrying Marines, including Bobbie Draper, to intercept Holden on his way to the Sphere. The communication with him, which Bobbie finally manages, seems confused and uncoordinated to the Martians due to his simultaneous conversation with Miller. Assuming Holden has gone mad, the Marines follow him into the sphere. The Thomas Prince also crosses the ring. It is noted that the objects that initially entered the bubble, i.e. Maneo's Slingshot speedboat, the torpedo and a UN probe previously sent into the bubble, are arranged around the sphere in the middle of the bubble and a purple, fog-like appearance is located. Anna speculates that in this way the ring is trying to isolate potential threats, much like the human body would do with a cyst. However, the overall situation worries some crew members. A Lieutenant of the Prince , who also belongs to the Methodist faith, tries to speak to Anna, but she is too absorbed in the situation and ignores him. The lieutenant, who is obviously very afraid of the situation, finally goes to his quarters and takes his own life. Anna, who is shocked by this news and struggles with her carelessness, finally gives him a moving speech in mourning. Anna's friend Tilly, who was friends with Julie Mao, recognizes Melba as Clarissa Mao, which she also tells Anna about. However, she assesses Clarissa's situation completely wrong and does not realize that she is behind the events on the Seung Un . Rather, she believes Clarissa may need legal assistance because her father's assets have been frozen since the Errinwright conspiracy was exposed, and some family members had to go into hiding. When Tilly confronts Clarissa, she attacks her using her special physical strength to avoid being exposed. Holden and "Miller" have reached a room within the sphere in which earth's gravity and a breathable atmosphere prevail, with Holden, out of suspicion, not to take off his space helmet. Miller admits that it is just one way for the protomolecule to press "buttons in the brain" of Holden in order to communicate with him. It becomes clear that the protomolecule is trying to complete a mission and that Holden must do his part to make it happen. Part of a kind of pillar grows from the floor and ceiling of the control room, and Holden is asked to put his hand into the remaining gap. Holden initially refuses and asks Miller to show his personal side as well, so that it is clear that it is not just the will of the protomolecule, which he still feels to be rather hostile, that he is supposed to fulfill. Miller then authentically describes the last moments of his life as a person, with Eros and as companion of Julie Mao on the approach to Venus. It becomes clear that Miller's consciousness passed into the protomolecule in some way. That is enough for Holden as proof that he now wants to make his contribution. At that moment the Mars marines arrive. The Marines believe Holden's action is dangerous, but Bobbie's attempts to use words to deter Holden from his intentions are unsuccessful. The Marines party eventually shoots Holden, but the projectiles stop in midair. In response to an immediate reaction from the room, which forms strange structures, the lieutenant of the Marines throws a grenade, but the detonation does not injure anyone. The lieutenant is then dismantled by the station and absorbed without a trace. At the same time, all ships inside the bubble are suddenly decelerated further, which in turn triggers violent negative g-forces. Clarissa's attack on Tilly is also suddenly interrupted. Holden closes the circuit and sees visions from the perspective of the protomolecule. He is shown various previous events seemingly in reverse order, including a multitude of rings within the bubble that are gradually disappearing, and exploding planets. Eventually Holden passes out.

The sudden braking has caused deaths and serious injuries on all ships in the bladder, and is viewed by the majority as a hostile action of the sphere ("station"), as the reasons for it are not known. Holden reports the result of his "conversation" with Miller. The station is trying to decide whether the people are a threat and has classified the ships' energy sources as a potential threat since the detonation of the reactor. An attack with Ashford's laser on the ring would not achieve its goal and only cause the station to destroy the solar system even faster. Most of the ships are destroyed while four ships pass through the ring, including one called Barbapiccola . This lands on a lithium-rich extraterrestrial planet, which the settlers christen "Ilus". After Inaros' heavily armed ship is forced to turn away by reinforcements from other factions, Inaros is left to an Ashford tribunal, drummer and the leaders of three important OPA factions. He appeals to the solidarity of the belters and points out that the OPA would only act in the interests of the "inner" if they kept the ceasefire. He assumes that the "inside" are currently weak and that they would only keep the peace until they were strong again. Marco agrees to keep his feet still for so long. In return, he offers to split the proceeds from the Sojourner component sales if you let him live. Murtry reveals to Wei that he intends to drive the Belters off the planet in order to maximize his profit from the situation, since his employment contract entitles him to 1 percent of the profits and the abundant lithium deposits are worth billions. He promises Wei to involve her, but asks her if she would also be able to eliminate Amos if necessary. She explains that she has Amos under control. Meanwhile, Okoye accidentally discovers a disease in herself, which she soon finds out is spreading among the settler population: foreign green microorganisms colonize the vitreous humor of the eyes and feed on it, which leads to blindness if left untreated. Miller leads Holden to a portal in the ground that is supposed to transport him to another structure on another part of the planet. Holden is disturbed by Elvi Okoye, causing Miller to disappear. He instructs her not to follow him and informs Amos and jumps into the portal. Murtry tries to take control, he searches for Holden, who can no longer be found. He questions Dr. Okoye, who eventually reluctantly reveals where Holden has gone and decides to pursue and eliminate Holden with Wei, who poses a threat to his plans. Okoye reveals to Amos that Holden is in danger, and Murtry and Wei both follow suit. Amos sends a message to Wei that he intends to tackle Murtry and that she shouldn't be there. When Wei makes it clear that she will not let him pass and that she would raise the gun if necessary, Amos shoots her reluctantly, but is shot by both her and Murtry. Okoye flees and looks for Holden to warn him. When she finds him and Holden learns that Amos has been injured and may be dead, he leaves her at the glowing ring to stop Murtry. She encounters the spider-like machine that contains Miller's consciousness and which can therefore also communicate with her and introduces herself. When she explains that Holden has left, Miller asks her for help. Meanwhile, Holden meets Murtry, and makes it clear that he will also die if he should have killed Amos. Murtry says he didn't confront Amos after the shootout. Then he explains his worldview to Holden: he himself is the pioneer who is developing the land and making it arable, and without whose preparatory work something like civilization is not possible. Miller's plan is successful: it destroys itself, but also deactivates the entire technology of the "builders" on Ilus and its moons. Before that, it was briefly fully activated, causing the entire planet to glow blue. Okoye experiences a threatening vision after falling into the glowing circle. As she later discusses with Holden, her vision resembles that which Holden saw during his experiences in the protomolecule station in the ring vesicle. When the planet is deactivated, Naomi and the others in orbit are relieved to find that the fusion engines are working again and the danger of the Barbapiccola falling is over. Meanwhile, Holden climbs out of the structure to the surface and radioed the Rocinante , where it turns out that the journey through the portal must have bridged about 800 kilometers, since it is now so far from the original landing site. The Roci returns to the surface and collects the survivors around Holden, including the two wounded, Amos and Murtry. Although evacuation would be possible now, many Belters choose to rebuild their settlement on the planet after the threat is neutralized. The RCE team of scientists led by Dr. Okoye will also remain on the planet and will work with the settlers. Dr. Okoye says goodbye to Holden and says he looks forward to researching these ancient structures and the conflict they served. She wants to go into hiding on Ceres, but after her research Bobbie is certain that a far-reaching conspiracy by parts of the Mars fleet with unknown forces from the belt to steal the Mars military technology takes place, and asks Avasarala for help. Avasarala, who has just recorded a message for her successor and is about to resign, only comments on the recorded message with the words that Bobbie's timing is miserable. Klaes Ashford tracks down Marco Inaros and discovers that he has removed two ferrous asteroids from his belt. Through a Mars fleet officer caught in the meantime, who belongs to the field of loyal followers of Inaros, he finds out that there is a connection between Inaros and the theft of military technology from Mars. Ashford pursues Inaros' ship, which appears to be processing one of the asteroids with camouflage technology, shoots it immobilized and boards it with his people. After a shootout, only Ashford and Inaros remain, with the latter being disarmed. Ashford is in turn overwhelmed by Filip, the son of Inaros and Naomi, who turns out to be his father's right hand man. Inaros and Filip send Ashford to death through the airlock, while Ashford is still trying to find out Inaros' plan - he secretly records the conversation with his forearm computer and wants to send it to his allies. On speculating that the asteroids should be "fired" at Tycho and Ceres, Inaros mocks him, declaring that Ashford simply cannot see it - even the Belters' dreams are insignificant. But it will come to an end that only Gürtler always have to pay. Ashford's message was successfully sent when he left the ship. Marco and Filip Inaros then carry out their plan: They shoot the asteroids camouflaged with stolen Martian technology directly towards Earth; the attack with the Sojourner gave Inaros a lot of valuable information about the earth's defensive network, which he now hopes to bypass.
