The Burnt Orange Heresy is a neo-noir thriller by Giuseppe Capotondi , which premiered on September 7, 2019 as the closing film of the Venice International Film Festival and was released in US cinemas on March 6, 2020.

1970 in Italy. Irresistibly charismatic art critic James Figueras teams up with seductive American Berenice Hollis. Together they go on a tour through Europe and visit the estate of the art collector Cassidy on Lake Como. Your host reveals that he is a great admirer of Jerome Debney, the reclusive "JD Salinger of the art world". So he asks James to steal a new Debney masterpiece from the artist's studio and wants to pay for whatever James asks.

The film is based on a novel of the same name by Charles Willeford , which was published in 1971 by Crown in New York. In Germany, the book was published under the title Heresy in Orange with the subtitle The Art of Killing . Giuseppe Capotondi directed the neo-noir thriller . The Italian director sets the story in the 1970s.
Originally, Christopher Walken was supposed to play the reclusive artist in the film who is embroiled in a murderous art fraud. This role was later filled with Mick Jagger . Claes Bang can be seen in another role , as it became known in April 2018. He is supposed to play an art critic who is supposed to steal a picture by the artist. Other roles were cast with Elizabeth Debicki and Donald Sutherland .
Filming began at the end of September 2018 on Lake Como in Italy.
The score was composed by Craig Armstrong .
The first screening took place on September 7, 2019 at the Venice International Film Festival , where The Burnt Orange Heresy was shown as the closing film. A screening also took place in September 2019 as part of the Toronto International Film Festival . At the end of September and beginning of October 2019 it was shown at the Zurich Film Festival and celebrated its premiere here in German-speaking countries. In January 2020 it was shown at the Palm Springs International Film Festival before it hit select US theaters on March 6, 2020.
