Hunley - Tauchfahrt in den Tod (original title The Hunley ) is a television American film from 1999 directed by John Gray . The film was first shown in Germany in 2001 by a private broadcaster.
The film is based on the story of the HL Hunley submarine during the Siege of Charleston in 1864.
action
Lieutenant George E. Dixon leads a group of volunteers who, on the orders of the Confederate General PGT Beauregard, board a submarine for the first time in order to free the city of Charleston from the grasp of the enemy. After two crews have already died in part, Dixon proves with his people that an enemy ship can be sunk that seals off the city's port. On the night of February 17, 1864, the Hunley undertook an attack with a crew of nine. The target is the USS Housatonic , a 1,240-tonne Northern States warship . An explosive charge is attached to a long pole at the bow of the Hunley. The explosive charge is rammed into the hull of the enemy ship and then released from a safe distance using a cable. The action succeeds - although the Housatonic discovers the Hunley at the last moment and opened fire, they can no longer prevent their own sinking. On the way back, all crew members on board the Hunley dramatically lose their lives.
criticism
The lexicon of international films judged it to be “an elaborately produced television film based on a true story, which despite its wealth of detail has some lengths and dramatic holes.” Similarly, the “Apollo Guide” wrote that the film “wise despite tension and good intentions too many leaks that he cannot plug ” .
Remarks
The film's soundtrack was released on Milan Records.
