The Big Heist is a documentary about the infamous Lufthansa robbery that took place on December 11, 1978 at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City . It is a film adaptation of the book "The Heist: How a Gang Stole $ 8,000,000 at Kennedy Airport and Lived to Regret It" by Ernest Volkman , from 1986.

The Irish-born mobster named James "Jimmy" Burke , who was released from prison in the mid-1970s, organized the largest cash robbery in the history of the United States with gangsters such as Henry Hill , known from Good Fellas . Investigator Richard Woods tries to solve the case and bring Jimmy Burke, who works for the New York Lucchese family , back under lock and key. As this gets closer to the truth, gangsters involved in the robbery are silenced.
