The John Peaks are striking, snow-covered and up to 415 m mountains at the southern end of Powell Island in the archipelago of the South Orkney Islands .
The British sealer captain George Powell and his American counterpart Nathaniel Palmer were probably the first to sight this mountain range in December 1821. Scientists from the British Discovery Investigations surveyed and named it in 1933. It is named after the British zoologist David Dilwyn John (1901-1995), who was a member of the Discovery Investigations committee.
